Former Corona del Mar High standout Taylor Dent lost to Australian
Lleyton Hewitt, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-3, in the round of 16 Monday at
Wimbledon.
In just his second tennis tournament since returning from an ankle
injury, Dent pushed Hewitt to four sets despite committing 13 double
faults and 39 unforced errors.
Hewitt, the No. 3 seed in the tournament and the No. 2 ranked
men’s tennis player in the world, seized a 4-0 lead 13 minutes into
the contest.
Dent’s game began to heat up, however, and he applied pressure in
the second set before taking the third set in the tiebreaker.
Dent, ranked No. 30 in the world, has never gone past the fourth
round in a Grand Slam event. He lost in the fourth round of last
year’s U.S. Open, as well.
Hewitt, who was the 2002 champion, will face Feliciano Lopez from
Spain in the quarterfinals while Dent said he will return to Orange
County and prepare for the Hall of Fame tennis championships in
Newport, R.I., scheduled to begin July 4.
