While Newport Coast 10-year-old Joseph Di Giulio went the furthest
among Newport-Mesa area entrants in the 103rd Southern California
Tennis Association junior sectional championships, numerous other
locals competed.
In girls 14s singles, Corona del Mar’s Cierra Gaytan-Leach, the
No. 3-seed, lost in the quarterfinals to No. 8-seeded Lacey Smyth of
Oceanside.
Ninth-seeded Melissa Matsuoka lost in the round of 16 to Corona’s
Arianna Colffer, the top seed.
In boys 16s singles, Fabian Matthews, a soon-to-be sophomore at
Corona del Mar High, lost in a round of 16 to Rolling Hill’s Estate’s
Tyler Bowman.
Seventh-seeded Jake Fleming, a soon-to-be junior at Newport
Harbor, lost in the round of 16 to Highland’s Derick Mitre, the No. 9
seed.
In boys 18s singles, recent CdM graduate Wesley Miller, the No.
6-seed, lost in the round of 16 to Los Angeles’ Mike Gurman, the No.
9 seed.
In boys 14s singles, Newport Beach’s Daron Arnold lost in the
round of 32 to Colton’s Lawrence Formentera, the No. 8 seed.
In girls 16s singles, Allie Walters, a soon-to-be sophomore at
CdM, lost in the round of 32 to Mission Viejo’s Micaela Hein, the No.
8 seed.
In girls 12s singles, Corona del Mar’s Neda Ghassemi lost in the
round of 32 to Laguna Beach’s Hayley Miller.
In boys 18s doubles, Costa Mesa’s Wesley Burrows and Newport
Beach’s Kaes Van’t Hof, the top seed, lost in the quarterfinals to
Irvine’s Chris Kearney and Michael McClune, the No. 5 seed.
In girls 18s doubles, Gaytan-Leach and Mission Viejo’s Micaela
Hein lost in the quarterfinals to the top-seeded team of Apple
Valley’s Victoria Brymer and Oxnard’s Mykala Hedberg.
Jill Damion, a soon-to-be junior at CdM, and Thousand Oaks’ Lauren
Ritz lost in the doubles round of 16. Newport Beach’s Jill Casserly
and Brittany Cluck, a soon-to-be senior at Newport Harbor, lost in
the round of 32 to the No. 3-seeded Esther Cadua of San Diego and
Downey’s Lyndsay Kinstler.
