Les, Rice triumph in Mesa Verde tourney

Mark Les and partner Paul Rice claimed the gross division title while

Terry Stewart and Mike Fox teamed to win the net championship of Mesa

Verde Country Club’s member/guest tournament.

Mesa Verde members Les and Stewart teamed with Rice, of Redlands

Country Club and Mike Fox of Pelican Hill Golf Club, respectively.

Net winners were also crowned in four flights.

Costa Mesa resident Ryan Knapp, who will be a freshman at Estancia

High this fall, and Santa Ana Country Club member Scott Travers will

compete in a 36-hole, U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying round Monday at

the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe.

The U.S. Junior Amateur will be held July 18-23 at Longmeadow

Country Club in Longmeadow, Mass.

The tournament, considered by many to be the most prestigious of

its kind, began in 1948 and is open to players who have not reached

their 18th birthday prior to the event’s conclusion. Golfers must

have a United States Golf Association handicap not exceeding 6.4.

Don DuBois and Steve Conway of Newport Beach represented the South

team against the North in the Roger Lapham Challenge Cup in

conjunction with the first two rounds of this week’s California Golf

Association championship.

DuBois and Scott Migihon each carded 74s Tuesday on Poppy Hills

Golf Course while John Pate led the South with his second straight

73. The North, though, prevailed, 740-743, for its third straight

victory in the two-round competition that counted five of six scores

for each team.
