* EDITOR’S NOTE: In response to a question last week about which of
four proposed logos for the city readers like, the overwhelming -- in
fact, near unanimous -- response has been for logo No. 1. What
follows is several of the more expansive responses to the question.
Don’t pick 2 or 4
My husband and I live over near Huntington Harbour. We read the
June 16 article in the Independent on the branding of Huntington
Beach and would like to submit our choices for the new city logo.
My choice is No. 1 My husband likes No. 3.
Numbers 2 and 4 are hideous!

2 gets some support
Erik Noble voted for logo No. 2 and suggests that the Surf City
USA letters would be easier to read if they were in white, outlined
by black and orange.
Claudia Noble voted for logo No. 4, but liked them all. They are
all good designs. No. 1’s lettering is hard to read. No. 3 looks
great, but doesn’t have Huntington Beach, CA. Both No. 1 and No. 3
would be well-suited to hotel gift shops and upscale merchandise. No.
2 and No. 4 have a younger and more mainstream feel.
Thanks, this was fun.

He likes No. 1, if he does say so himself
I like No. 1. It is clean, simple and modern and represents the
ideal theme of Huntington Beach. Very easy to read and gets across
the theme without being heavy-handed. The pier is a major element in
this design which is the main icon for the city. The design will
translate well for different printing methods and sizes.
Logo 2 and 4 are basically the same. Must be the same artist,
since the surfer is identical. It’s very cartoon-ey, and ‘70s-ish.
Not in a good way but dated. Kinda like something you would find in a
cheap souvenir shop on a inexpensive t-shirt.
Logo 3 looks a lot like the logo that is being used now. Pretty
rough and again gives the feel of a cartoon. USA is not readable at
the size in the paper which is part of the name.
Actually I designed logo 1. I thought it would be OK to voice my
opinion, just like our elected officials can vote for themselves.
Thanks for publishing the story and keep up the good work,

No. 1, by friends and friends alike
My friends and I think that No. 1 is by far the best. It is sleek,
classy and tight. It’s the only one I would put on my car as a bumper
sticker, if that is all in the plans, too. What has been the favorite
by others so far? I have lived in Huntington Beach for the last 11
years and have no desire to change my location on 21st Street anytime
soon, I love Huntington Beach.

No. 3 gets some backing
I chose logo No. 3. It is bright, easily recognizable, and to the
point. We are Surf City, sun and surfboards!

No. 1 is ... No. 1
Definitely No. 1 is the best.
Where the others are really quite dated and “expected” in their
design, No. 1 is simple, innovative and really a design of the times.
If you look at all the others, you can see what the masses may like,
or expect, but having a design background, again, No. 1 is No. 1.

No. 4 gets one man’s support
I vote for No. 4 as the new logo for Huntington Beach.
DOUG LADA
Huntington Beach.
No. 1 has the sun going for it
I like logo No. 1 for Surf City best as it captures the pier at
sunset, which is always a spectacular scene and I like the outline of
a surfboard hosting the entire logo.
The other logos are nice but a bit cheesy.

Everything else is just too busy
The best one is No. 1, it says it best:
The pier, sunset and surfing, oh so perfect.
The others are too busy....

And, finally, Harman gets backing, too
I would strongly support Assemblyman Tom Harman for the state
Senate. He has been a wonderful representative for Huntington Beach
in the Assembly. He has the experience and know how to be just as
effective as a state Senator. Go for it Tom.
