McBean scores twice

Born and raised in Scotland, Scotty McBean knows a thing or two about
soccer.
After moving to the United States 25 years ago, McBean decided to
pass on his soccer heritage to his son, Jack.
So far, it has been the demise of all opponents in the third- and
fourth-grade boys Gold division of the Daily Pilot Cup.
The younger McBean scored two goals to bring his tournament total
to nine, and the Mariners Christian soccer team -- coached by the
elder McBean -- continued its tournament shutout with a 6-0 semifinal
win over Our Lady Queen of Angels Saturday at Costa Mesa Farm
Complex.
Mariners will be seeking its third straight championship at 2 p.m.
today at field No. 3 against Rea, a 6-1 winner over Lincoln Saturday.
“We should match up with [Rea] really well,” Scotty McBean said.
“The skill level is even on both teams, so it will be the team that
shows the best effort that wins.”
Mariners Christian wasn’t shy about taking an early lead Saturday.
The younger McBean lofted a shot over OLQA’s goalie in just the
fourth minute for a quick 1-0 lead, while Derek Kula headed in a pass
from Luke Napolitano in the eighth minute for a 2-0 lead.
And Ethan Hold capped the first-half scoring spree by settling a
pass in the middle, lining it up and firing it in for a three-goal
lead that Mariners took into the half.
“We have good shooters and we have good passers and we have a good
goalie,” said Jack McBean, also a club soccer player.
Mariners goalie Michael Allen, who mostly spends his games
watching the action from afar, has yet to be scored on in this year’s
tournament. A shutout today would conclude a perfect performance for
Allen and the rest of the Mariners squad.
“I don’t think [Rea] has a strong defense, so we want to attack
them early,” the younger McBean said about today’s matchup. Luke
Langdon, Kevin Norman, Rob Rosenast and Chris Okey also played for
Mariners.
