Annual blessing of the artists tonight

Once a year, before everything hits a frenetic summer pace,

artists put down their paint brushesto get blessed at the annual

Blessing of the Artists.

With the start of the summer art festivals less than a month away,

the tradition of blessing the artists in early June has become a

nine-year tradition at St. Catherine of Siena Church.

This year’s blessing will again be by Fr. Eamon O’Gorman at 7 p.m.

today. Some artists bring their tools to be blessed. Because St.

Catherine’s is still under construction, the event has been moved to

St. Catherine School’s Parish Hall, 3090 S. Coast Highway. A

Lagunatunes

spring concert

Mixing madrigals, lively gospels, and beloved songs from movies

and musicals, Lagunatunes Community Chorus presents “a kaleidoscope

of classics,” in its free spring concert, 5 p.m. Sunday at

Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 Saint Ann’s Drive.

Musical offerings include “As Time Goes By,” “The Impossible

Dream,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and madrigals “In these Delightful

Pleasant Groves,” and “Sing We and Chant It.” Small groups and

Island kick-off party reunites Head Band

They’re baaaack. The Island Party taking place Saturday night at

the Womans’ Club will host a reunion of a blues/rock/dance band of

local acclaim, the Head Band.

The Head Band is comprised of Jeff “Bugga” Monahan, Rico Brown,

Joe Eps, Michael Fickling and Andy Duncan. Members are natives of

Laguna Beach or longtime residents, and many music aficionados will

recall their performances at such venues as the Sandpiper and the

Capistrano Depot.

The event, co-sponsored by No Square Theater, is a fundraiser to

help the Laguna Beach Resource Center. Those wishing to support the

event with donations or auction items are invited to contact Sande

The evening features entertainment by members of No Square

Theater, as well as a demonstration of Hawaiian dance by Linda Bailey

of Wally’s on Beach Street. There will be hula lessons and a silent

auction featuring a four-day trip to Catalina Island. The trip was

donated by Suzie and Don Campbell -- recent winners of the Newport to

Ensenada Race.

A raffle will follow dinner and there will also be a prize for

best Luau Look, so those with tickets are encouraged to dress the

part. It takes place at 6 p.m., Saturdayat the Woman’s Club, 286

Saint Ann’s Drive. Tickets are $35 in advance, or $45 at the door.

Film Society to

screens ‘Sonny Boy’

The Laguna Beach Film Society presents “Sonny Boy,” directed by

Soleil Moon Frye, at 7 p.m. Friday at the Laguna Art Museum, 307

Cliff Drive, with a special appearance by the director.

Frye (who played the part of Punky Brewster) shares a personal

journey with her father, Virgil Frye, an actor and human rights

activist. Virgil’s battle with Alzheimer’s changes their lives as

they travel to Virgil’s childhood home in Iowa to visit relatives.

Clearance sale at Museum Store

The Museum Store at Laguna Art Museum is holding a summer

clearance sale from Saturday to Sunday, June 12. Everything will be

60% off. The museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 307 Cliff

Art college plans 16th fundraiser

Laguna College of Art & Design hosts its 16th annual Collector’s

Choice fine art exhibition from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the

campus, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

The event features a fine art raffle and auction. All ticket

holders will have a chance to win a choice of any contributed piece

of artwork in the raffle. Dinner and entertainment are included.

Tickets are $100 each.

More than 80% of the college’s students require some level of

financial assistance, and all proceeds from this event will benefit

the Student Scholarship Fund and provide funds to enhance facilities

and technology.

Original paintings and drawings in a variety of media, as well as

sculpture and hand-blown glass, will be offered.

The college’s gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, June 6

through Friday, June 10; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11 to

preview the collection of artwork for Collector’s Choice.

Story, craft and

hot cocoa night

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf hosts a children’s Story and Craft

Night from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, including complimentary hot cocoa

and cookies for children. There’s no admission charge. Proceeds

benefit Top of the World Elementary School arts programs. 610 N.

Egg tempera

paint workshop

Artist Paul Paiement will demonstrate and teach the art of working

with egg tempera from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at Laguna

Art Museum. Participants will learn how to make their own egg tempera

paints while exploring the techniques and tricks in working with this

ancient medium. Free with paid admission to the museum. For more

Craft Guild show goes until dusk

The next Laguna Craft Guild show will be 10 a.m. until dusk on

Sunday, June 12 at Main Beach Park on the cobblestones. The show

takes place on alternate Sundays, offering handmade arts and crafts
