Santa Ana Country Club held its couples club championship, or “Los
Novios,” May 1, with a couple of first-time winning pairs in the net
and gross divisions.
George and Micki Rach claimed the net title by three strokes over
Ray and Kathy Young while Bill and Margot Friis won the gross
division by two shots over Chet and Patricia Houston.
Thirty-six teams played 18 holes. Each duo’s best of two scores
was recorded on the odd numbered holes while both players’ scores
counted on the even holes.
Santa Ana Country Club’s men’s club championship will open with
qualifying rounds June 17-18 and continue June 24-26.
The eight low qualifiers, which include defending champion (Bill
Welch), after 36 holes of stroke play June 17-18 will advance to
match play.
As of last week, 20 players had signed up for the championship,
Director of Golf Mike Reehl said.
The men’s club winner will complete Santa Ana’s team that will
compete in the Jones Cup at 1 p.m. Aug. 30 on its home course. The
team includes Reehl, head pro Geoff Cochrane, women’s club champion
Marianne Towersey and senior winner Chris Veitch.
