4 Huntington Beach students get ROP honors
Four Huntington Beach students were honored as Coastline Regional
Occupational Program outstanding students in a ceremony held May 13.
The students were nominated either by their ROP teacher or the ROP
Career Specialist at their high school.
Out of more than 11,000 students who take classes through
Coastline ROP yearly, 80 students were nominated and 11 finalists
representing different career paths were chosen through an
application and interviewing process.
George Kilada, of Edison High School, was chosen as outstanding
auto technology student; Patrick Christy, of Ocean View High School,
was chosen as outstanding public services student; Janet Chavez, also
of Ocean View High School, was chosen as most inspirational student.
Students register for classes -- and to vote
With the help of a new program that allows students to request
voter registration information when they register for classes, more
than 1,000 Coast Community College students have registered to vote
since November.
Since the district implemented the program at all three community
colleges in November, 1,017 students have used a touch-tone telephone
registration system to request voter registration materials.
The California Secretary of State’s office sends the student a
voter registration packet and information in the mail. To register,
students sign the materials and return the packet to the Secretary of
State’s office.
