Businessman named citizen of the year

Seymour Beek, the president of Balboa Island Ferry, will be

honored June 3 as Newport Beach’s citizen of the year at the Pelican

Hill Golf Club.

The gala ceremony, hosted by The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce

will host a gala ceremony. Former citizen of the year recipients will

be honored, along with Chamber of Commerce board chairs.

Beek, born in 1933, worked in the aerospace engineering industry

for 35 years. Apart from his position with Balboa Island Ferry, he

also serves as a partner in Island Marine Fuel.

In addition, Beek chairs the Newport Beach Harbor Commission and

the Balboa Island Yacht Club’s advisory and race committees.

The cost to attend the ceremony on June 3 is $150 per person. Call

Sage Hill students help environment

Sage Hill School students donated $2,400 to water-quality

organization Defend the Bay on Wednesday, organization founder Bob

Caustin said.

The money was raised by students in the school’s Environmental

Action Club, Caustin said. In March, the club hosted a concert and

film screening at Sage Hill’s Newport Coast campus to raise money for

the water-quality group. Caustin said he has yet to decide how to

spend the donation.

Arts Committee needs new members

The city of Costa Mesa is seeking people to serve on the Cultural

Arts Committee, which promotes arts programs and helps raise art

awareness. The City Council recently expanded eligibility to include

not only residents of the city but business owners and those who work

in Costa Mesa.
