UCI handles Gauchos
UC Irvine junior outfielder Erik Johnson’s two-run home run
highlighted a six-run first as the visiting Anteaters posted a 12-3
Big West Conference baseball win Saturday over UC Santa Barbara.
Johnson, one of five Anteaters with multiple hits, was 2 for 3
with three RBIs, while designated hitter R.J. Brown went 3 for 5 with
two RBIs, including one of the visitors’ four doubles.
Senior Steve Schroer went seven strong innings to pick up the
victory and improve to 6-5, as UCI upped its season record to 29-23,
8-9 in conference. Schroer allowed three earned runs and seven hits,
before giving way to senior Michael Koehler, who threw two scoreless
innings, allowing just one hit.
Senior second baseman Brett Dalton went 2 for 6 with one RBI to
extend his hitting streak to 11 games, while senior first baseman
Matt Anderson went 2 for 3 and sophomore shortstop Chad Lundahl was 2
for 4 with two RBIs.
UCSB falls to 23-29, 5-12.

Sapp finishes 77th
* GOLF: UC Irvine freshman Garrett Sapp shot a 5-over 75 for the
second straight day in the final round of the NCAA men’s golf West
regional at Stanford University Golf Course Saturday. Sapp, who had a
13-over total of 223 over the three-day tournament, finished in a tie
for 77th place.
Sapp, who competed as an individual, had one birdie, four bogeys
and one double bogey for the final round. Rob Grube of Stanford shot
a 5-under 65 Saturday to claim medalist honors with a 54-hole total
of 6-under 204.
Sapp was a first-team All-Big West Conference selection this
season when he recorded six top-10 finishes.
UNLV won the regional team title with a total of 846, defeating
New Mexico by three shots.
