Christopher Hitchens -- journalist, author, critic, and

self-proclaimed political gadfly -- will discuss his new book “Love,

Poverty and War: Journeys and Essays” and the impact of literature in

the 21st century. Hitchens is well known for his iconoclastic

“The Right to Marry,” is the topic of Cass R. Sunstein’s lecture.

Sunstein is the Karl L. Llewellyn Distinguished Service Professor of

Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago. Sunstein has served as an

adviser in the Office of the Legal Counsel of the U.S. Department of

Justice and has been involved in constitution- making and law-reform

activities in numerous countries. A Harvard Law School graduate, he

clerked for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Francine du Plessix Gray will speak about her just-released “Them:

A Memoir of Parents.” The author’s mother, Tatiana duPlessix, the

wife of a French diplomat, was a beautiful, sophisticated “white

Russian” who had been the muse of the famous Russian poet Vladimir

Mayakovsky. Her father, Alexander Liberman, was a gifted magazine

editor and aspiring artist. As part of the progressive artistic

Russian emigre community living in Paris in the 30s, the two were

destined to meet. When Paris was occupied during WWII, they fled to

New York with their daughter Francine. Gray’s parents determinedly

rose to the top of New York City’s high society, holding court to a

Who’s Who list of the midcentury’s intellectuals and entertainers.

She will speak from 1 p.m. to

3 p.m. at the Newport Beach Central Library in the Friends Meeting

Robert Corell will present “Rapid Warming of the Arctic.” Corell

chaired the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment -- a four-year study

involving eight Arctic countries. The assessment confirmed that the

Earth’s climate is changing more rapidly and persistently than at any

time since the beginning of civilization, and that these changes are

more severe in the Arctic than elsewhere. Corell is a senior research

fellow in the Atmospheric Policy Program of the American

Meteorological Society. He is a participant in the Initiative for

Science and Technology for Sustainability, and he helped to establish

the U.S. National Assessment of the Consequences of Climate

Variability and Change. Program begins at 7 p.m., with a reception at
