Senior Wesley Miller improved to 35-1 in dual matches with two 6-0

wins while host Corona del Mar High’s doubles teams won all nine sets

in the Sea Kings’ 14-4 CIF Southern Section Division I second-round

boys tennis win Saturday over Fountain Valley.

The Sea Kings will face Loyola, an 11-7 winner over Peninsula

Saturday, in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday. A coin flip Monday

will determine the host team, CdM Coach Tim Mang said. Loyola

eliminated the Sea Kings in the quarterfinals last season.

Seniors Sean Pham and Alex Nguyen lost just five games in sweeping

their doubles sets while the duos of senior Spencer Reitz and junior

Jonathan Kroopf, along with senior Matt Chou and sophomore Ryan

Caughren, each won all three sets for third-seeded CdM (19-1), which

received a first-round bye.

Freshman Fabian Matthews won his final two sets, 6-3, 6-0, after

dropping the first set, 6-1. Matthews improved to 36-3 in dual

matches this season.

Miller won his two sets in roughly 20 minutes before giving way to

John Leonard.

Mang split up Reitz and Chou, who claimed the Pacific Coast League

doubles title, for the playoffs in attempt to secure more points.
