COSTA MESA -- Although Estancia High’s starting middle blocker Dallas
Kopp wasn’t playing, the CIF Division III defending champions swept
their first-round playoff match against the visiting San Gorgonio
Spartans, 25-10, 25-20, 25-12.
“We had a new lineup so I was glad to see a new team be able to
execute and play together,” said Eagles Coach Tracey Ingraham, whose
fourth-seeded team improved to 20-9, after a 12-0 record in the
Golden West League.
Leading the way for Estancia was outside hitter Scott Markley with
16 kills, 12 digs and a service ace. Setter Trevor Holmes helped out
with 26 assists and eight kills. Shaun Markley led the defense with
14 digs and added seven kills to help out the offense.
“We came into the game confident because we knew we could play our
game no matter what,” Holmes said.
Kopp showed up in the middle of the match right from having
surgery for his broken finger.
“When he walked in it lifted the spirits of the team,” Ingraham
said.
For the Spartans (8-9, 6-6 in the San Andreas League), David
Cantrell had five kills and five digs. Vincent Padilla added five
kills and eight digs.
Estancia will travel in its second-round playoff game Tuesday
against Adolfo Camarillo High.
