Laguna polo team posts victory X 3
The Laguna Beach water polo eighth-grade-and-under team posted a 3-3
record last weekend at the 12th annual San Diego Cup water polo
tournament.
The three wins earned Laguna an 11th-place standing in the 24-team
tournament.
Laguna Los Alamitos “B”, 7-3, South Coast “B”, 9-3 and Santa
Barbara, 10-4.
The team’s losses were to Bishop School, 10-3, 2004 tournament
champion South Coast “A”, 8-5, and Club Split Orange County, 9-6.
Scoring goals for Laguna were Victor Alcone, who had a team-high
15 in the tournament, David Brunner (11), Robert Chew (six), Robbie
Quellmalz (four), Morgan Brick (three) and Chris Kennedy and Sean
Spera with one each.
The quick reactions and long reach of Brett Thompson allowed the
Laguna goalie to record 20 saves in the six games.
Drake Dixon, Cole Kennedy, Zachary Riegler and Reed Thompson also
contributed to Laguna’s 11th-place finish.
In other water polo action:
The Laguna Beach water polo 12-and-under boys’ team placed eighth
overall at the San Diego County Cup XII.
The event drew teams from throughout the state.
Laguna, which competed in the sixth-grade-and-under division, went
3-3 overall. It defeated Davis of Northern California, 8-5, Los
Angeles Water Polo Club, 15-0, and Rose Bowl, 15-1 . Three close
losses came at the hands of San Diego Shores (11-8), Newport Beach
(7-6) and Lamorinda (9-7) of the Bay Area.
Laguna’s 12-and-under team is composed of co-captains Nolan
McConnell and Spencer Dodson, goalie Hunter French, Riley Browne,
Nicky Brunner , Vagne Carrette, Trevor Collins, Eric Henrikson, Drew
Kanner and Alex Shapero.
