Ocean View swipes third

Mike Sciacca

A week that began with some concern for Ocean View High baseball

coach Aaron Kavanagh ended on a high note for the Seahawks, who won

two games to capture the 2005 Golden West League championship.

Ocean View whipped both Costa Mesa, 19-0, and Orange, 9-3, to wrap

up the program’s third consecutive league crown. The only other time

the school had won three straight league titles was between 1985-87.

The Seahawks, who had previously defeated Costa Mesa, 4-2, at home

on April 15, had little trouble with the Mustangs on the road.

“I was actually a little worried about this game going in because

Friday was such a big game (against Orange),” Kavanagh said. “I was

worried we might look past a Costa Mesa team we beat 4-2 at home.”

But Kavanagh’s fears were alleviated by a balanced attack and a

huge game from Alex Burnett. The senior right-hander pitched 6 2/3

innings of no-hit ball before giving up his only hit.

Burnett also struck out 17 of the 24 batters he faced.

Burnett was backed by a prolific offense that belted five home

runs off Mustangs pitching, which included a solo homer by Burnett.

Jason Walker and Marc Fernandez each hit solo shots, Jeff Roth

delivered a grand slam and Matt Hughes had a three-run home run.

Derek Martin nearly hit the team’s sixth, but his blast bounced

off the top of the right field fence for a double.

In a game that featured the league’s top two teams, Ocean View

trailed Orange early, before pulling away to the title-clinching 9-3

victory.

The Seahawks trailed, 2-0, but a big fifth inning put them in the

lead for good. Geoff Klein doubled and went on to score on a throwing

error, James Kang had an RBI double to tie the score and Roth had a

two-run double to highlight a seven-run inning for Ocean View.

Orange got a run back in the sixth, but John Vega hit a two-run

triple in the bottom of the inning to make it a 9-3 game.

Roth retired the Panthers in order in the seventh to complete the

victory.

In other baseball action, Marina and Huntington each picked up

victories, but Edison suffered a loss in recent Sunset League action.

In a key showdown at Esperanza, Marina’s Chris Torres hit an RBI

single in the top of the seventh inning, and it turned out to be the

winning run in a 5-4 win over the Aztecs.

Torion Rayford hit a solo home run, and Torres, Justin Sellers and

Patrick Murray all doubled. Nick Plantz had two RBIs and picked up

the pitching win for the Vikings.

The Aztecs turned the tables on Marina two days later by posting a

5-1 victory over the Vikings, which left the teams tied for first

place.

Huntington got a two-run home run from Justin Ratowsky and Justin

Latempa struck out 14 in a complete game victory in a 3-0 shutout of

host Fountain Valley. Ratowsky also doubled, as did the Oilers’ Hank

Conger.

Huntington came back two days later to rip the Barons, 8-1.

Ratowsky hit a three-run home run, Lucas Aumiller hit a solo homer

and double, and Cameron Mullen doubled twice for the host Oilers.

Edison, meanwhile, was on the short end of a 7-4 score against Los

Alamitos. In the next meeting between the teams two days later,

however, Edison drilled the host Griffins, 9-1.

Chad Blauer had a double and an RBI for the Chargers in the 7-4

loss and knocked in four runs in the victory.

In softball, Krystal Heinle fanned 15 and also had three singles

and two RBIs as Marina pounded host Fountain Valley, 8-0, in Sunset

League action

Dani Miller doubled and finished with two RBIs as Edison held off

host Huntington, 3-2, in another Sunset League game.

Ocean View was a 10-2 winner over host Costa Mesa in a Golden West

League clash. Junior Sara Theophilus got the pitching win and also

doubled, and freshman Erica Congelliere hit a two-run home run for

the Seahawks.

In boys’ volleyball, Huntington and Edison claimed a share of the

Sunset League title with Los Alamitos by winning their regular season

finales.

The Oilers, who won a league championship for the third

consecutive year, got nine kills from Mike Gleason in sweeping

Esperanza, 25-17, 25-11, 25-16.

Edison came on strong in the final week of regular play. The

Chargers earned a key sweep at Los Alamitos, and followed that with a

25-20, 25-22, 25-20 sweep of Marina. Tim Golden had 11 kills against Marina.
