The Sage Hill School softball team defeated host St. Margaret’s,
13-3, in an Academy League contest Tuesday. The win sets up a crucial
regular season finale against Capo Valley Christian Thursday at
Cook’s Park that will determine the third and final playoff spot in
the league.
Rebecca Hembarsky struck out five in all five innings of work. The
junior also went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run.
The Lightning (10-8, 6-3 in league) collected six doubles in the
game, including two by Alison Gonzalez.

Sailors fall just short
* BASEBALL: Senior Greg Miner hit a grand slam in the bottom of
the seventh inning with one out to pull the Newport Harbor High
baseball team within one run of the lead, but a strikeout and
groundout ensued and the Sailors lost to visiting Woodbridge, 13-12,
in Sea View League play Tuesday.
Newport (8-16, 3-11 in league), scored five times in the ninth and
tallied 12 hits. The Sailors conclude their season at 3:15 p.m. today
at Woodbridge.
Lightning’s own finish
* SWIMMING: Sage Hill School swimmers Dan Chen and Allison
Gringonis competed in individual events in the CIF Southern Section
Division IV preliminaries Tuesday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in
Long Beach.
Grigonis was 28th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.71) and 32nd in
the 200 individual medley (2:37.21). Chen was 24th in the 100
freestyle (52.38).
Chen teamed with Alex Nguyen, Danny Harold and Perry Pang to
finish 22nd in the 200 medley relay (1:52.97). Chen, Julian Tooma,
Chase Caillouette and Beau Caillouette finished 23rd in the 400 free
relay (3:40.54).
The top eight in each event qualified for the finals while Nos.
9-16 reached the consolation round.
