CdM golfers sparkle
The Corona del Mar High boys golf team finished seventh among 21
teams Monday at the CIF Southern Section South Coast divisional team
championships at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
The Sea Kings, who came in as the No. 4 team from the Pacific
Coast League, shot 378 as a team, bettering PCL rivals Tesoro (381),
University (382) and Northwood (378).
The Sea Kings also finished ahead of Back Bay rival Newport Harbor
(390), which had defeated them in the regular season.
CdM junior Cody Stuart shot 1-under-par 71, his low round of the
year, to pace the Sea Kings.
Ben Tilsen (74), David Su (74), Matt Story (78), Jamie Bloom (81)
and Zach Rabinovich (81) contributed to what Coach Mike Starkweather
termed the program’s most gratifying performance in years.
Su will represent CdM Monday at the Southern regional individual
tournament at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach.
Villa Park (366) and St. Margaret’s (370) earned the top two
places to advance to the team championship finals Thursday.
Sailors wind up 11th
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team finished 11th at
the 21-school CIF Southern Section South Coast divisional team
championships Monday at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
Davis Pemstein (74), Spencer Quinn (76), Brandon Sowers (76),
Justin Morehead (81) and Paul Neff (83) scored for the Sailors,
making their first appearance at the team divisionals.
Pemstein, the runner-up in the Sea View League individual
tournament, will represent the Sailors Monday in the Southern
regional individual tournament at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington
Beach.
CdM finishes third
* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team closed out the
regular season with a 5-3 nine-inning victory over host University
Monday in Pacific Cast League action.
Michelle Tolfa struck out 11 in a complete-game win for the Sea
Kings (15-10, 6-4 in league).
Senior Lauren Gega led off the ninth with a single, advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Schulte, and scored the go-ahead
run on Allie Duernberger’s single. Duernberger scored thanks to a
base hit and two passed balls.
The win wrapped up third place in league for the Sea Kings.
UOP tops Anteaters
* BASEBALL: The University of the Pacific built an 8-0 lead after
five innings and posted an 8-3 win over visiting UC Irvine in a Big
West Conference baseball game Monday.
Will Brindza’s bases-loaded triple off Anteater starter Jimmy
Alstot in the first inning started the momentum for the Tigers
(22-27, 7-11 in conference).
UCI (25-20, 7-8) scored single runs in the sixth, eighth and
ninth, including Matt Anderson’s pinch-hit homer in the eighth.
Brett Dalton tripled and scored on a single by Danny Miramontes in
the ninth.
UCI junior catcher Mark Wagner went 0 for 5 to snap a 13-game
hitting streak.

OCC seeded No. 4
* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team was awarded the
No. 4 seed and will host San Bernardino Valley in a best-of-three
series in the first round of the Southern California regional
playoffs, Friday and Saturday.
The Pirates (24-14) were the highest-seeded team out of four
Orange Empire Conference representatives in the playoffs after going
15-6 in the OEC to share the title with Santa Ana.
They won 2 of 3 from the Dons, however, to win the tiebreaker.
San Bernardino (24-13) finished third in the Foothill Conference.
The Wolverines went 19-8 in conference.
The series begins Saturday at 1 p.m. The second game is scheduled
Sunday at 11 a.m., with a potential third game to follow 30 minutes
after the conclusion of Game 2.
Sapp in regionals
* GOLF: Garrett Sapp, a freshman on the UC Irvine men’s golf team,
has been selected to compete in the NCAA West regional at Stanford
Golf Course May 19-21.
Sapp, a first-team All-Big West selection, leads the Anteaters
with a 73.29 average in 38 rounds this season. He has recorded six
top-10 finishes and an additional three top-20 showings. His highest
finish was fourth place in the Northwest Collegiate Classic in
September.
He was 16th in the Big West championships in late April.
Eagles finish 11th
* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team finished 11th among 21
teams at the CIF Southern Section Southern divisional individual
tournament Monday at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills.
Golden West League champion Marcus Sostak shot 2-over-par 74 to
pace the Eagles, who shot 400 as a team, 34 strokes behind victorious
Cypress.
Garrett McMasters (79), Greg Les (81), Austin Serr (83) and Ryan
Gleason (83) also scored for the Eagles.
Sostak and Serr, who tied for third at league finals, will compete
at the Southern regional individual event Monday.
