Sailors finish off unbeaten season

The Newport Harbor High junior varsity boys swim team completed an
undefeated season by winning the Sea View League championships at
Irvine High Thursday to claim the league title outright.
Newport sophomore Nick Yeager won both the 100-yard freestyle
(51.91 seconds) and the 200 free (1:54.26), while sophomore Brock
Hill (1:55.52) and freshman Brandon Parole (1:56.00) completed a
Sailors’ sweep of the 200 freestyle.
The Sailors’ 400 free relay team of sophomore Breck Wight, Hill,
Parole and Yeager set a new Sea View League record with a time of
3:27.60, shattering the old record previously set by El Toro in 1998
by more than 2.5 seconds.
The Newport team of freshmen Kyle Fultz and Collin McKibbin,
together with Parole and Yeager, also placed first in the 200 free
relay.
Jonathan Sanglerat was another winner for Newport in the 500
freestyle.
Second-place finishes were posted by sophomores Aaron Blei, Bryce
McClain, Steven Taylor and Wight in the 200 medley relay; Fultz in
the 50 free (23.77); Blei in both the 200 individual medley (2:12.69)
and 100 breaststroke (1:08.83); and Taylor in the 100 butterfly
(1:00.62).

Junior varsity
The Newport Harbor High junior varsity girls swim team won a Sea
View League title following a tie for first with Aliso Niguel at
league finals Thursday at Irvine High.
With the 400-yard freestyle relay remaining and Newport down by 10
points, Sailors’ relay teams of Devon Shaw, Ali Carter, Calli
Manderino and Kelly Morrison, as well as Allysa Peterson, Danielle
Mayer, Heather Taylor and Hailey Sandberg, both claimed victories to
push Newport into a tie atop the team standings.
The Sailors’ better record in league dual meets gave them their
second straight league championship.

Open division
The Newport Harbor open division girls team also brought home a
first-place finish, scoring 517 points, well ahead of second-place
Laguna Hills’ 344.
Newport had victories in eight of the 10 events, including wins by
Mimi Bury, Heather Thomson, Rosie Hope, Kimmy Morrison and Christine
Wood.

Junior varsity
The Costa Mesa High junior varsity boys swim team cruised to a
first-place finish at the Golden West League finals Thursday at
Orange High.
The Mustangs amassed 347 points, 33 ahead of second-place
Saddleback.
Jon Ochoa and Zach Fisk each won two events while Sam Edmon,
Skylar Twohig and Scott Neslage all topped the field in one event.
Ernie Carbajal and Jesse Ahern each had a second-place finish.
The Estancia boys finished seventh, with Jeff Crosson finishing
second in the 500-yard freestyle and 50 backstroke.

Sarah Limongelli, Brittany Mucha, Courtney Lindberg, Michelle
Payne and Abbie Dyvig all won their events to lead the Costa Mesa
High junior varsity girls swim team to first place in the team
standings at the Golden West League finals Thursday at Orange High.
Boy swimming
Junior varsity
All three relay teams were victorious to help the Corona del Mar
High junior varsity boys swim team finish fifth at the Pacific Coast
League championships Friday at Northwood.
The 200-yard relay team of Nick Jones, Ryan Hultman, Michael Berry
and Omar Mubarek won in 1:52;12.
The 200 free relay team of Berry, Hultman, Ryan Kent and a fourth
swimmer not reported, won in 1:35.48.
The 400 free team of Berry, Jones, Kent and Gregg Sanford won in
3:32.23.

Junior varsity
Tamara De La Loza finished second in the 100-yard freestyle and
200 free while Camille Hewko was third in the 200 free and Katherine
Kaczmarek was third in the 50 free to lead the Corona del Mar High
junior varsity girls swim team to a fourth-place finish at the
Pacific Coast League finals Friday at Northwood.

defeated Newport Harbor, 22-25, 25-20, 22-20, in their Back Bay
showdown Friday.
