Rotarians unveil butterfly sculpture

JIM DE BOOM

The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa held its April 27 meeting at the

Environmental Nature Center’s Butterfly House, according to

newsletter scribe Dick Dickson.

The meeting included the unveiling of a butterfly sculpture

entitled, “Dawn to Dusk in the Estuary,” that was created by Newport

Beach arts commissioners Kathleen Harrison and Arlene Cartozian.

Harrison, who is a painter, and Cartozian, a sculptor, collaborated

for more than 100 hours to depict scenes of the back bay, highlighted

by an array of waterfowl, noted Dickson.

George Schroeder served as the master of ceremonies and introduced

the artists. He also noted 15 Newport-Balboa Rotary Club members and

many of their spouses, along with District Gov. Grant Engle, district

governor nominee Lane Calvert and Newport Beach Mayor and honorary

Newport-Balboa Rotarian Steve Bromberg, who dedicated the butterfly

sculpture.

The Butterfly House, a joint project of the Rotary clubs of

Newport-Balboa and Okazaki South, is one of two such facilities in

Southern California. It has been a longtime dream of Bo Glover,

executive director of the center.

Through the efforts of the two Rotary clubs, as part of their

centennial projects, this 1,200-square-foot facility was dedicated

last Nov. 10 and opened to the public on Apr. 17.

Besides the butterfly sculpture, Okazaki South’s Kazuhiro Isogai

has carved a stone friendship statue that will be installed in the

Butterfly House once it clears customs. The statue will be dedicated

at a Rotary Club meeting June 8, during the planned visit by a

delegation of Okazaki South Rotary on the way to the Chicago Rotary

international convention, according to Dickson.

“Even though the butterflies were inactive due to the late time of

day, everyone, especially our Rotarians and spouses, were amazed what

this commitment to our community has done to educate and entertain

both young and old,” Rotarian Bill Hossfield said.

The Butterfly House is open six days a week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It is recommended that you wear something yellow to get a close look

at the special creatures and come during the middle of the day.

There is no charge, but donations are greatly appreciated.
