CORONA DEL MAR -- Fans in a crowded Corona del Mar gym watched as the
visiting Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team defeated the Sea
Kings in four intense games to rule the Back Bay, for the night at
least.
“This was the best volleyball we’ve played the whole year,” said
Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn, whose team defeated CdM, 25-20,
25-18, 21-25, 25-22.
Brett Perrine led the way for the Sailors with 29 kills, three
blocks and six digs. Brett Auer added 10 kills, eight digs and a
service ace to help the Sailors dominate the court. Setter Ted Slater
was a big part of the team’s success with 51 assists.
Leading the way for the Sea Kings was Kevin Welch with 21 kills.
Tom Welch ended the game with 13 kills.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game because they had the
Welch twins on the other side and they weren’t going to quit,” Glenn
said.
Scott Slaughter added in nine kills for CdM and setter Phil Bannan
had 37 assists.
“They probably have the best player in Orange County [Perrine].
Obviously I didn’t prepare my team enough,” said Steve Conti, CdM’s
coach.
Newport Harbor finished the regular season 18-11 and will prepare
for next week’s CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. The
pairings will be announced Monday.
Corona del Mar finishes the regular season 23-7 and will compete
in the CIF Division II playoffs.
