Breakers break into win column

In the Pacific Coast League series finale between the Laguna Beach

and Corona del Mar high baseball teams, the Breakers finally broke

into the win column by shutting out the visiting Sea Kings, 1-0.

Corona del Mar had previously defeated Laguna on March 25 and

April 26.

The series finale, the third and final league meeting between the

schools, was moved from Friday to Saturday, due to unplayable field

conditions.

Kevin Kelly went the distance and turned in his best outing of the

season.

In a defensive and pitching struggle, Laguna posted the game’s

only run in the fourth inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Landry drew a leadoff walk

before Noah Brewster followed with an RBI double.

In the seventh inning, Corona del Mar threatened to tie the game.

With runners stationed at first and second with two out, Laguna’s

Trevor Pierce denied that tie by throwing out the potential tying run

at the plate to end the game.

Landry, Jeff Bolar and Michael Selevan also had hits for Laguna,

which won its fourth league game.

On Tuesday, Laguna dropped a tough game at league-leading Tesoro,

4-3.

Calvin Mead started on the mound for the Breakers and pitched six

solid innings, before giving way to Nate Pickett.

Tesoro took a 3-0 lead into the sixth, where Laguna overcame its

early inning struggles to show some offensive life.

In the top of the sixth, Jonathan Begay hit a one-out single and

advanced to third on a single by Sam Palfreyman. On the play, a

Tesoro throwing error allowed Begay to score, making it a 3-1 game.

With Palfreyman now at second base, Landry connected on a long

homerun over the left-field fence to tie the score at 3-3.

But in the bottom of the inning, Tesoro scored a run with two outs

to take the lead for good, 4-3.

Landry led Laguna with two hits.

Mead and Garrett Rauch also singled for Laguna.

The two teams meet today at Laguna for the third and final time

this season in league play when they conclude their series.
