Newport Harbor wins Sea View
The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team claimed the Sea View
League championship after a 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 victory over visiting
Woodbridge Thursday.
Senior Brett Perrine led the Sailors with 14 kills, four blocks,
three aces and 13 digs.
Brett Auer had seven kills and 16 digs while Parker Stevens had
six kills and three blocks for Newport, while Westin Dunlap had five
kills and two blocks, Ted Slater had 40 assists and Brad Schneider
finished with two aces and 10 digs.
The Sailors are 10-0, 17-11 overall going into today’s match at
5:30 p.m. against Corona del Mar.
Miller tops in league
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High senior Wesley Miller won his second
straight Pacific Coast League boys individual tennis title after two
victories to wrap up the league finals at University Thursday.
In doubles, the top-seeded duo of Spencer Reitz and Matt Chou also
won twice to claim the league title. Reitz and Chou defeated CdM
teammates and the 2004 PCL champions Sean Pham and Alex Nguyen, 6-4,
6-4, in the final.
Miller, the No. 1 seed, bested Jason Lin of University, 6-1, 6-0,
in the semifinal before downing Nick Meister from Tesoro, 6-2, 7-5,
in the final. Sea King freshman Fabian Matthews fell to Meister in
the semifinals, 7-6, 7-5.
Chou and Reitz defeated Nicholas Vaccari and Gaithan Vaidyonathan
from University, 6-2, 7-6, in one semifinal while Pham and Nguyen
bested Charles Weiskirch and Brandon Tran of Northwood, 6-4, 6-1.
Matthews defeated Lin, 8-3, in an eight-game pro set format for third
place.
OCC claims title share
* BASEBALL: Orange Coast College sophomore Luke Beck had the
game-winning RBI in the 13th inning to give the host Pirates a 9-8
victory Thursday over visiting Santa Ana and a share of the Orange
Empire Conference championship.
OCC (15-6, 24-14 overall) finished a game that ended in a tie in
the 10th inning on March 17 due to darkness, then played a final
conference game against the Dons in which OCC fell, 8-7.
Eagles down Mesa in 4
* VOLLEYBALL: Three players tallied 12 kills each as the host
Estancia High boys volleyball team completed its second straight
undefeated season in the Golden West League with a 22-25, 25-15,
25-15, 27-25 victory over visiting Costa Mesa Thursday.
Twin brothers Scott and Shaun Markley, along with Dallas Kopp, led
the Eagles’ hitting attack while senior Trevor Holmes tallied seven
aces and 34 assists.
Shaun Markley had 15 digs and Kopp added four solo blocks as the
league-champion Eagles (19-9, 12-0) rebounded from a 22-19 deficit in
the fourth game. Estancia staved off two game points in that game to
prevail.
Ryan Bagwell tallied 12 kills, while Garrett Walthers and Mitch
Caldwell added eight and seven kills, respectively, for Mesa (12-4,
9-3). Andrew Melcer had 32 assists.
Sage’s Chandy shines
* TRACK AND FIELD: Sage Hill School junior Zach Chandy captured
Academy League boys titles in the 200, 400 and 800 meters Thursday
while Sage’s Laura Gordon won three girls events and finished second
in the 300 low hurdles (49.6) in the league finals at Saddleback
College.
Jimmy O’Hare (boys shot put), Amy Werblin (girls discus) and
Kelsey Rose (girls 200) also won league titles for Sage Hill.
Vanguard advances
* TENNIS: The top-seeded Vanguard University women’s tennis team
defeated fourth-seeded Westmont College, 5-0, Thursday.
Today, Vanguard faces third-seeded Point Loma at 9 a.m. for the
NAIA Region II championship.
In men’s action, Vanguard advanced to the NAIA Region II
championships after defeating Alliant International, 5-0, Thursday.
Vanguard today meets the defending Region II champion, Azusa
Pacific, in a repeat of the 2004 championship, in which Vanguard
fell, 5-0.
CdM finishes Uni in 4
* VOLLEYBALL: Twin brothers Tom and Kevin Welch tallied 15 and 16
kills, respectively, while three players had five digs apiece to lead
the visiting Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team to a 25-23,
25-22, 22-25, 25-12 victory to conclude Pacific Coast League play
Thursday.
Scott Slaughter and Gus Ellis each added six kills while Phil
Bannan and Grant Almquist contributed 27 and 23 assists,
respectively, for league-champion CdM (23-6, 9-1 in league), ranked
second in CIF Southern Section Division II.
Shane Collins, Kevin Welch and Blaine Nielsen each tallied five
digs and Ellis had three blocks for the Sea Kings.
Sea Kings tripped, 3-2
* SOFTBALL: Corona del Mar scored twice in the second inning but
fell, 3-2, to host Tesoro Thursday in a Pacific Coast League game.
Heather Lohrman scored CdM’s first run and Morgan Jones scored on
Michelle Allred’s single.
