CdM clinches 3rd straight title

The Corona del Mar High doubles tandem of senior Matt Chou and
sophomore Ryan Caughren swept to help the Sea Kings wrap up their
third straight Pacific Coast League boys tennis championship with a
13-5 win at University Monday.
The Sea Kings (17-1, 8-0) will now try to earn the No. 1 ranking
in Orange County with a win today over Woodbridge.
“[The Warriors] are No. 1 and we’re No. 2, but that’s not the way
we feel about it,” CdM Coach Tim Mang said.
Uni could have earned a share of the title with a victory Monday.
CdM senior Wesley Miller and freshman Fabian Mathews, who both
swept in singles Monday, will be the top two singles seeds,
respectively, at league finals, beginning Wednesday at Uni.

Eagles victorious
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team clinched at
least a share of the Golden West League title by sweeping visiting
Saddleback, 25-12, 25-21, 25-14, Monday.
The Eagles (17-9, 10-0 in league) can clinch their third straight
league crown outright with a victory today over Santa Ana.
Shaun Markley led the winners with 14 kills Monday, while twin
brother Scott Markley chipped in 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs.
Senior setter Trevor Holmes had 30 assists and four ace serves for
the Eagles.
Five Tars move on
* GOLF: Five of the six players representing Newport Harbor High
earned spots among the top 18 who advanced to today’s second day at
the Sea View League boys golf championships at San Luis Rey Downs in
Bonsall.
Senior Davis Pemstein leads the way for the Sailor qualifiers
earning a spot in the top five with a 3-over-par 75 Monday.
Junior Paul Neff came up big with a 78, while Brandon Sowers (82),
Justin Morehead (82) and Chris Willard (83) were also among those who
moved on from an original field of 36.
Foothill’s Andrew Gunson (73) takes the lead into tod’y’s noon tee
time.
CdM duo advances
* GOLF: Corona del Mar High sophomore David Su shot 2-over-par 74
over 18 holes, while junior teammate Jamie Bloom shot 76 Monday to
advance to Wednesday’s final day of the Pacific Coast League boys
golf championships at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
Su is in fifth place, while Bloom is tied for 10th, as 39 golfers
competed for spots in Wednesday’s final day. The top 12 plus ties
advanced.
Cody Stewart (78) Zach Rabinovich (79), Ben Tilsen (80) and Matt
Story (80) also competed for the Sea Kings Monday.
Richie Niu (70) is the leader.
Warriors handle Tars
* TENNIS: The doubles team of senior John Cefalia and freshman
John Hutchinson won two sets to pace the Newport Harbor High boys
tennis team in a 14-4 Sea View League home loss Monday.
The Sailors (6-8, 5-4 in league) can earn third place in league
and a guaranteed CIF Southern Section playoff berth with a win over
Aliso Niguel today.
Newport forfeited a 15-3 first-round win over Aliso for using an
ineligible player and the two enter today’s match tied in the
standings.
Woodbridge is the unbeaten league champion.

Eagles’ Sostak leads
* GOLF: Estancia High junior Marcus Sostak, the captain of the
Eagles’ boys golf team, shot par 72 at Los Serranos Country Club
Monday to earn the lead after the first day of the two-day Golden
West League tournament.
Estancia’s Ben Schramm (81), Greg Les (82) and Garret McMasters
(82) also return today.
No Costa Mesa golfers advanced.
OCC rowers shine
* ROWING: The Orange Coast College crew posted victories with its
first and second men’s novice eight boats at the Western
Intercollegiate rowing championships Sunday at Lake Natoma near
Sacramento.
The first novice eight won in 6 minutes, 9.8 seconds, while the
second novice eight won its final in 6:30.9.
The victories qualified both boats for the Eastern College
Athletic Conference championships Saturday and Sunday in Worcester,
Mass.
The second OCC women’s novice eight finished second, while the
first women’s novice eight was sixth Sunday.
OCC’s men’s pair finished fourth, while the men’s varsity four was
sixth.
