Anteaters defeat Spartans, 15-11

The No. 12-ranked UC Irvine women’s water polo team defeated No. 9
San Jose State, 15-11, in the 11th-place game of the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation championships Sunday at Cal.
UCI took a 6-3 lead in the opening period and had a 10-8 lead at
the half. The Anteaters added to the lead in the third period, when
they outscored the Spartans, 3-1.
UCI sophomore Robyn Kaake had four goals and senior Aleah Amr
added three in her final game as an Anteater.
Freshmen Nikki Frish and Jessica Lewis each scored twice as did
senior Erica Nicholson.
Seniors Karly Tivenan and Alicia Weider added goals for the
‘Eaters, who received six combined saves from goalkeepers Kelly
Woodbury (four) and Lauren Machanis.
UCI finishes 14-17.
Mary Beth Cox and Laura Scott each had four goals for San Jose
State, which received four saves from Kendra Adams.
Vanguard wins twice
* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University pitchers limited visiting Hope
International to six hits in two games as the host Lions completed
the regular season with a doubleheader sweep in Golden State Athletic
Conference play Saturday.
Jen Olvera, Krystal Keltner and Lindsay Emmel combined for a
two-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory in Game 1.
Holly Martinez scored three times and Ashley Mauro delivered two
hits and three RBIs for the Lions (25-25, 8-16 in the GSAC). Olvera
struck out six with no walks in three innings.
Jenna Willis, Jennifer Rynda and Krista Mahan combined on a
four-hitter in the 4-2 Game 2 win. Martinez finished 2 for 3 with two
runs scored.
Mauro and Lindsey Dyer each had four hits in two games.
The NAIA Region II tournament is scheduled to begin May 10.

Lions tamed in twin bill
* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team lost both games
of a doubleheader against visiting California Baptist Saturday to end
its season.
The Lions lost the first game, 2-1, and the second, 5-3.
Vanguard (13-32, 9-21 in the Golden State Athletic Conference) did
not make the playoffs.
Ensign rolls to title
* ROLLER HOCKEY: The Ensign Intermediate roller hockey team won
the junior high championship April 19, beating Las Flores, 7-3.
Ensign goaltender Collin Monge, with a league-best 0.92
goals-against average, bested a team averaging 9.3 per game.
Ensign’s Cort Adler, Drew Brahs, Cody Campbell, Parker Conant,
Richard De St. Jean, Ryan Iverson, Blake Kelly and Brett Olinger all
had either a goal or an assist.
