Alternatives for improving the 405
The Orange County Transportation Authority will hold an open house to
present four alternatives for improving the San Diego (405) Freeway
corridor.
Residents and business owners who live near the freeway or who
have an interest are invited to attend any of six open houses.
Engineers and other employees will be on hand to talk about
recommended improvements and listen to recommendations.
The Costa Mesa open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday
in the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center Victoria Room at 1845
Park Ave. Others are being held in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley,
Seal Beach, Westminster and Rossmoor.

Shellfish quarantine begins Sunday
The Orange County Health Care Agency announced the state’s Annual
Mussel Quarantine is set to begin Sunday. Harvesting mussels for
human consumption will be illegal along the entire coast of
California through October 31. The ban includes all bays and inlets.
From 1927 to 2004, 521 people have died in California from
paralytic shellfish poisoning, according to a the health care agency.
Mussels are potentially more hazardous than other shellfish. Cooking
is not an effective safeguard against poisoning.
Art sale to benefit education
Local community and business leaders will gather tonight for an
art sale to benefit Orange County’s Hispanic Education Endowment
Fund.
The sale, featuring paintings and sculptures by renowned artist
Victor Hugo Zayas, will take place at the Pacific Club, 4110
MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach, from 6 to 9 p.m. The funds will go to
benefit Hispanic students with an interest in pursuing arts careers.
