INSIDE THE
SCHOOL DISTRICT
Here are some decisions and discussions from Tuesday night’s
Laguna Beach Unified School District meeting:
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION
The board unanimously voted to approve mental health services for
special education pupils. Mental health services are to be provided
by psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and licensed clinical social
workers.
WHAT IT MEANS
It would ensure that access to mandated mental health services for
special education pupils would be maintained.
FIVE-YEAR DEFERRED MAINTENANCE PLAN
The board unanimously voted to approve its 2004/2005 deferred
maintenance plan to assure that the district will receive matching
funds.
WHAT IT MEANS
The approval of the plan is a routine annual occurrence. Its
intent is to provide state matching funds to assist the district with
expenditures for major repair and replacement of existing school
building components.
QUALITY SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
The board unanimously voted to approve to increase substitute
teacher daily pay rate beginning the 2005/2006 fiscal year. Currently
57% of the districts pay a higher rate than the Laguna Beach
district.
WHAT IT MEANS
The district feels the 4% increase will attract more substitute
teachers, will help give the district priority status and will make
the district more competitive with industry standards. Officials
think the increase will retain quality substitute teachers and
improve support of the educational programs.
