Team Hobie, Sportsworld pick up wins
Team Hobie and Sportsworld each picked up key victories in Majors
Division action at Riddle Field.
Team Hobie 10, Rotary 0
Team Hobie got off to a quick start and didn’t let up en route to
the shutout victory in a game halted by the mercy rule.
Spencer Freidenrich, who started on the mound for Team Hobie, also
kick-started the offense for his team, his two-run single to left
field in the bottom of the first inning scored Jack Pillsbury and
Nick Bishop, who had singled.
Team Hobie tacked on two more runs in the frame when Alex Bekken
smacked a two-run single down the right-field line.
After working out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second
-- a key stop came when shortstop Morgan Curry snagged a line drive
off the bat of Tyler Kesler for the second out -- Team Hobie found
itself having to fend off another Rotary challenge in the third
inning.
With two on base and one out, Rotary’s Michael Hyden drove a shot
to right field, where Cody Alter fielded it on one hop and threw it
on a line to Team Hobie catcher Shane Selfridge. Selfridge was able
to place a tag on Rotary’s Jake Glazer as he attempted to score from
second.
In the bottom of the third, Team Hobie, a team that had lost its
previous five games by one run or in extra-innings, broke the game
wide-open.
Freidenrich’s second hit of the game loaded the bases, and
consecutive walks by Curry and Bekken forced in two more runs. With
one out, and bases still loaded, Rem Zona hit a fielder’s choice that
scored run No. 7, and Chris Barwick hit a shot to centerfield to
drive in another run for an 8-0 lead.
The final two runs came off a bunt single by Kirk Knott and a
bases-loaded walk to Cody Alter.
Shane Selfridge, who walked twice in the game, closed on the mound
for Team Hobie and struck out three batters on 11 pitches to end the
game.
The victory squared Team Hobie’s record at 6-6 and moved the team
into third-place in the Majors standings.
In other Majors Division action:
Sportsworld 5, VFW 3
With the game on the line and first place at stake, Alex Iannotti
delivered big again for Sportsworld.
After VFW had rallied in the top of the sixth inning to tie the
score, Austin Paxson got on base before Iannotti sent a game-winning
home run over the fence at Riddle Field for the final margin of
victory.
Derek Riegel’s shot to right-center field in the top of the sixth
had brought VFW into a 3-3 tie.
Iannotti also drove in Sportsworld’s first run when his RBI ground
out plated Paxson.
VFW gained a 1-1 tie in the top of the second when Rex Strombotne
singled and scored on a Nort Penny ground ball, and took its only
lead, 2-1, when Santi Piernini doubled to score Tyler Pierce.
Iannotti brought Sportsworld into a tie at 2-2 when his double
scored Paxson, and a sacrifice fly by Taylor Preston brought in
Iannotti for a 3-2 lead.
