No Square seeking a few Lagunatics
TOM TITUS
If you’re a Lagunan eager to poke a little fun at your hometown,
Laguna Beach’s No Square Theatre is about to give you your chance.
Auditions for the 13th annual musical parody, “Lagunatics 2005,”
will be held May 7 at the theater group’s rehearsal facility, 1863 S.
Coast Highway in Laguna.
Director Bree Burgess Rosen, who started the annual production of
parody in the early 1990s, says that roles in the show are open to
singers, dancers and “personalities” age 16 and older. Appointments
are preferred, but walk-ins will be welcomed.
“This wacky, original, burlesque-style show will use skits and
parody lyrics, set to hits from the great musicals, to poke fun at
all the quirks and foibles that make Laguna unique,” Rosen declared.
“Your rehearsal schedule will depend on your level of
participation,” she said. “The more talent or time you have, the more
we’ll try to use you.” However, she added, “No one rehearses more
than five times a week or longer than four hours at a stretch.”
Rosen, who is co-scripting the show with Chris Quilter, has been
involved in the creation of all 12 previous Lagunatics, which she
refers to as “a hit musical roast of the coast.” This time around,
she emphasizes, dancers are particularly in demand.
“Bring an accompaniment tape or CD of a two-minute song for our
player,” she advises. “Dress comfy in appropriate shoes. If you tap,
we’ll love you.”
The theme of this year’s Lagunatics is “Senior Prom” and will be
musically directed by Justin Pyne and choreographed by Vanessa
Schneller. Eliza Korshin is stage manager for the show.
Performance dates are July 29 at 8 p.m., July 30 at 2 and 8 p.m.
and July 31 at 7 p.m. in the Artists’ Theater at Laguna Beach High
School.
Part of the proceeds from this year’s show will go toward the
creation of the Susi Q Senior Center.
