Newport teams tie in AYSO
Brianna Truxton made a crisp pass to Kathryn Zimmermann, who drove a
left-foot shot to the back of the net to tie the score at 1 in an
AYSO Region 97 girls under-12 soccer game involving Newport Beach and
Newport.
Jose Jogwe beat the opposing defense in the third quarter to put
her team in the lead, 1-0. With the game on the line, keepers Morgan
Williams and Savanna Gastineau made saves on shots from Nicole
DiNatale and Beth Barnard.
The defenses were led by Nicole Baker, Courtney McIntosh, Sophia
Evans, Meggie Case, Allison Schelin, Kelly Rorden, Christie Ohlhaver,
Madison Wooters, Molly Anderson and Madison Grant.
In girls under-10 play:
* Red Rockets 2, Mean Green Fighting Machine 2
Madison Mastera and Andria Spears both recovered and continued
playing from game-time injuries, while Savannah Vrbas had many
steals. Livvie Muscatello, Kailen Locke and Jenna Jarvis played solid
defense, and Emily Bernstein stopped many shots.
In girls under-8 play:
* Red Ladybugs, Cheetahs
Putting up a tough defense were Evelyn Stephens and Madeline Bubb,
while Jessica Ochoa turned in a powerful kickoff that sent the ball
flying to the Cheetahs’ goal. Jaclyn Manderson, Camille Christensen
and Anabel Sandoval made it difficult for the Cheetahs to break
through to the other side of the field. Sophia Jeffries showed solid
maneuvering skills and scored a goal after taking two shots. Lauren
Doble assisted while Abbey Pickett scored in the second half of the
game.
In boys under-8 play:
* Fireball Blasters, Green Goblins
Fireballs were led by Nicholas Carey, Cooper Hendrix, Sargis
Srapyan, Joshua Kramer and Ea Olotoa on offense, and Adam Armbruster,
Hunter Feduska, Brandt Walton and Cade Walton on defense.
In girls under-6 play:
* Green Lightning, Red Butterflies
Nikki Sanchez, Destry Comp and Riley De Castroverde all scored for
Green Lightning while Paula Pedrani led the defense and controlled
the midfield. Caroline Wilkes had some huge throw-ins, putting Green
Lightning into scoring position.
In girls under-5 play:
* Red Ladybugs, Blue Stars
Claire Covina led the scoring with three goals while Emma Botros
was all over the field, scoring twice. Chloe Rettig played a strong
game, helping with defense and scoring a goal. Ladybugs’ defense was
helped by Paxton Bryant, who guarded the goal and helped her
teammates with passing and interceptions.
