Code Red, a spring girls’ Under-13 team in California Futbol Club,
cruised to a pair of easy weekend victories.
In its first match, Code Red took care of Newport United, 3-0.
Erika Longoria started the scoring for Code Red with a solo run to
the goal past a host of defenders, giving her squad a 1-0 lead at the
break. After the halftime break, Kelly Mitsumori and Rebecca Cruz
each added an unassisted goal to make it 3-0.
Code Red followed that win with a 5-1 rout of the Untouchables.
Despite missing several early shots, Code Red still was able to
overcome a 1-0 deficit.
A well-placed pass from mid-fielder Rachel Pasternak set up Code
Red’s first goal as Osiris Ceja crossed the ball to Kirsten Marony,
who netted a goal to tie the score at the half.
Keeper Tiffany Van Tress, sweeper Jodi Hwang and defenders Danica
McGuire, Ashley Haprov, Lauren Hanson and Alison Hensley consistently
denied the Untouchables any scoring opportunities, and Erica Cabibbo
showed her versatility on both offense and defense.
After the break, Code Red went on a scoring spree, ignited by
Longoria’s back-to-back goals. Mitsumori tallied an assist.
Cruz landed a high arcing shot that was caught by the goalie, but
she fell back into the goal area, boosting the score to 4-1. Breanne
Justice set up the final goal on a cross to Cruz, whose goal capped
the scoring at 5-1.
