Former Tar Weber State bound

Newport Harbor High product Nedim Pajevic, a 6-foot-9 sophomore for
the Santa Ana College men’s basketball team last season, has signed a
national letter of intent to play at Weber State next season.
Pajevic earned second-team All-Orange Empire Conference honors
both years he was with the Dons.
As a sophomore he started 23 of the 25 games he played and
averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
He led the team in shooting percentage (51.1) and free-throw
percentage (44 of 55 for 80%).
As a senior with Newport Harbor, Pajevic was Co-Player of the Year
in the Sea View League and first-team All-CIF Southern Section
Division II-AA.
He averaged 15.7 points and just more than 13 rebounds in his last
year with the Tars.
Sailors, CdM excel
* SAILING: Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar sailing teams
finished second and third, respectively, in the Pacific Coast team
racing championships that concluded Sunday.
The top three teams advance to the national sailing championship
Memorial Day weekend in Jansen Beach, Fla. to compete for the Barker
Trophy.
The Newport Harbor team -- comprised of Matt Hogan, Blair Belling,
Charlie Buckingham, Marla Menninger, Michael Menninger, Carly
Chamberlain, Taylor Grimes and Cole Hatton -- finished 10-3 in the
event.
CdM was 8-5, thanks to team members Peter Stemler, Peter Tucci,
Reid Vitarelli, Alexandra Dunlap, Christine Burke, Andrew Mason, Ryan
Pawell, Parker O’Brien and Hadley Rokicki.
The Sea Kings defeated champion Point Loma Sunday, giving the
Pointers (12-1) their first loss in what is believed to be more than
two years.
Two Pirates advance
* GOLF: Orange Coast College sophomore Jason Cassidy and freshman
Justin Gray each earned berths in the Southern California men’s golf
regional by playing well Monday in the Orange Empire Conference
tournament at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills.
Cassidy, an Estancia High product, shot par 146 over 36 holes,
while Gray was 4 over.
The SoCal regional is Monday at the SCGA course in Murietta.
Mesa’s Angle medalist
* GOLF: The Costa Mesa High boys golf team defeated visiting La
Quinta, 227-264, Monday in a nonleague match on the Mesa Linda course
at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.
Mesa’s Robert Angle was the medalist, shooting a 3-over-par 39.
Garrick Vohs (45), Joe Freeman (47), Troy Wright (49) and Eddie
Rodriguez (49) also scored for the Mustangs (5-8).
Harper paces UCI
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine senior Kimberly Harper won the long
jump with a mark of 18 feet, 8 1/2 inches at UC San Diego’s Triton
invitational Saturday.
UCI’s Danielle St. John placed fourth in the high jump (5-5 1/4 ),
Suzanne Purmort was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1 minute, 2.90
seconds) and Erika Williams finished sixth in the triple jump (37-4
1/2 ).
On the men’s side, UCI’s Ricky Barnes finished second in the 800
(1:51.17), Scott Jarvis was fourth in the 400 hurdles (53.90), Julian
Eison was fourth in the high jump (6-8 3/4 ) and Patrick Grogan
placed fourth in the triple jump (45-10 1/2 ).
UCI hosts the Steve Scott invitational Saturday.
Les key for Eagles
* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team defeated Don Lugo,
206-240, in a nonleague match at Los Serranos Golf and Country Club
Monday.
Estancia’s Greg Les was the medalist with a 2-over-par 38. Ryan
Gleason (41), Garrett McMasters (41), Pat Flannery (43) and Ben
Schramm (43) also scored for the Eagles (13-8).
Tars top Northwood
* LACROSSE: The Newport Harbor High boys lacrosse team defeated
visiting Northwood, 11-5, Thursday at Monte Vista.
Northwood took an early 2-0 lead, but senior Kyle Brown led the
rally with six goals on 10 shots, aided by junior Donnie Hoover with
three goals and an assist. Bobby Ward had two goals and Eric Dobson
tallied four assists.
Vinnie Nasca and Sal Torres fronted the defense for the Sailors
while Trent Sladics, Ryan Hanrahan and Anthony Santos contributed
plays.
Vanguard overcome
* BASEBALL: For the fourth time in as many days, the Vanguard
University baseball team fell to Point Loma Nazarene in Golden State
Athletic Conference action.
Monday, the host Sea Lions used a six-run third inning to pull off
the 7-5 victory.
Vanguard took an early lead in the second inning when Matt Franco
hit a two-run single and Isaac Salazar singled home Aaron Barret.
Luke Iverson homered in the third to up VU’s lead to 4-1.
Vanguard fell to 13-29, 9-18 in conference.
Whitney whips Sage
* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team lost to Academy
League host Whitney, 12-6, Monday.
Dan Chin and Tyler Ross were the only multiple winners on the day
for the Lightning, winning two of their three sets at No. 1 doubles.
Sage Hill learned Tristan Cordier, the team’s No. 1 singles
player, has mononucleosis. It is hoped he can return in time for the
CIF Southern Section playoffs.
Whitney, ranked No. 4 in CIF Division V, all but locked up the
Academy League title, improving to 7-0 in league with two matches
left.
Sage Hill, No. 5 in Division V, fell to 6-2 in league.
Tartans edge Bolts
* GOLF: The Sage Hill School boys golf team lost to St.
Margaret’s, 213-223, Monday in an Academy League match at San Juan
Hills Golf Club.
Matt Pierce of St. Margaret’s was the medalist with a 1-under-par
35.
Josh Chen (41), Geoffrey Grant (42), Ryan Babbush (42), John Neff
(49) and Rory Foubister (49) scored for the Lightning (8-4, 6-2 in
league).
Lions drop a pair
* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team lost both games
of a doubleheader Thursday against Cal Baptist in Riverside.
The host Lancers (42-3, 19-1 in conference) secured their second
straight Golden State Athletic Conference championship with wins of
2-1 and 4-0.
Vanguard (23-23, 6-14) managed six hits in the second game, four
coming off the bats of Heather Durham and Melissa Smith, but could
not score a run.
The Lions play a doubleheader at Concordia today at 2 p.m.
