Seaweeds collect crown
The Corona del Mar seventh-grade girls soccer team won the Huntington
Beach/Newport-Mesa Middle School League title with a win in penalty
kicks over TeWinkle in the championship match.
Goalkeeper Corey Cano rejected five of TeWinkle’s eight penalty
shots for the CdM Seaweeds (7-1), while Claire Eadington rifled the
decisive shot into the back of the net.
CdM’s defense was led by Azadeh Nazemi, Hayley Raguse, Allegra
Margolis, Kelsey Kaczmerek and Eadington. Midfielders Paige Sigband,
Cynthia Bui, Kelly Feeley, Nikki Flinn and Bayli Steffl controlled
the tempo of the match while strikers Lauren Smits, Sarah Keddington,
Brooke Demiranda and Katie Demiranda (twins) mounted numerous attacks
on goal. Other players who were not able to make it to the game, but
contributed all season, include Madison Simmonds, Amanda Garrett and
Karoline Wang.
The win marked the first CdM seventh-grade girls soccer title,
according to Coach Bryan Middleton.
TeWinkle finished 6-2.
