Gymnasts head for Houston

SCATS Gymnastics of Huntington Beach will send its Level 10 boys’
team to the Junior Olympic Nationals, which will be held in Houston
in May.
The six Level 10 gymnasts each recorded a minimum all-around score
of 42.0 at the recent Regional competition to qualify for the
Nationals. Each SCATS gymnast, under the guidance of coaches Albert
Avchian and Grigor Chalikyan, scored 48.0, or better, at the regional
meet.
Region 1 competition brought together the top club gymnasts from
northern and southern California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Hawaii.
Andrew Stover won the silver medal in the all-around competition,
won bronze on floor exercise and is the regional champion on pommel
horse.
Jason Chu earned bronze medals in the all-around competition and
on rings, silver on pommel and is the regional champion on vault.
Jason Laughton received a second place finish on vault and was
third on the high bar.
Also qualifying for the Nationals from SCATS are Darryl Garris,
Jonathan Grey, Francisco Grey and Glen Ishino.
In Level 7 competition, Jesse Glenn captured the regional
championship on rings, parallel bars and high bar. He also took the
silver medal for the all-around competition and a bronze on vault.
Adrian de los Angeles brought home bronze medals in the
all-around, rings, pommel horse and parallel bars. Sam Mikulak
achieved champion status on the vault.
Joshua Glenn added bronze medals on vault and rings, silver for
all-around, and is the regional parallel bar champion in his age
division.
Level 6 gymnast Kanji Oyama won gold for his ring performance as
well as silver on the vault.
In other Level 6 action, Alex Anunciation took silver on the
pommel horse and rings, and Aaron Yoshizuka placed third in the
all-around and high bar competition.
In youth soccer:
Dwyer squads first in regular season
Dwyer Middle School’s eighth-grade boys’ and girls’ soccer teams
each captured first place in their respective divisions during
regular season play in the recently completed season.
The Junior Oiler boys finished the season with a 6-1 record.
The squad was composed of Beau Amaral, Brandon Bauman, Francisco
Calderon, David Clamp, Brett Cross, Logan Emery, Tyler Geery, Will
Koon, Tim Lunghino, Saul Padilla, Cameron Pirtle, Nick Refice, Wes
Sarver, Alec Stone and Sean Walsh.
Dwyer’s boys finished second in the postseason tournament, falling
to Calvary Chapel 2-1 in the tournament final. Francisco Calderon
scored a second-half goal for the Junior Oilers.
The Junior Oilers girls also matched the boys’ squad during the
regular season by posting a 6-1 record.
Team members included Tara Briggs, Colleen Schlosser, Kimya
Jafroudi, Maddie McKinley, Jordan Snyder, Elise Nordin, Sydney
George, Farah Powell, Kelly Combest, Colleen Ryan, Raquel Chavez,
Callie Payetta, Rachael Osman, Brittany Hazard and Karlie Weisman.
Like their counterparts, the Junior Oiler girls placed second in
the postseason tournament. They dropped a 1-0 match to Sowers in the
final.
Wave 2, Code Red 1
Code Red 1, Lasers 0
California Futbol Club Code Red split its two weekend games,
losing to the Laguna Niguel Wave, 2-1, before shutting out the Irvine
Lasers, 1-0.
In the loss to the Wave, Rebecca Cruz scored the lone Code Red
goal on a solo breakaway.
In the 1-0 win over the Irvine Lasers, Alyssa Strickland scored on
a deflected indirect kick by Osiris Ceja in the 1-0 win over the Irvine Lasers. Tiffany Van Tress recorded a shutout in goal, assisted
by George Demes, Jodi Hwang, Danica McGuire, Erica Cabibbo and Ashley
Haprov in the backfield.
