All-stars tip off tonight

The annual Orange County North-South high school boys and girls

all-star basketball games will feature four Newport-Mesa area

athletes tonight at Orange Coast College.

Estancia High’s Carlos Pinto and Newport Harbor’s Taylor Young

will participate for the South squad in the 40th annual boys game,

while Newport’s Vanessa Miller and Sage Hill’s Katie Puishys have

been selected to the girls South team.

The games, which pit the top graduating seniors in Orange County,

will tip off with the girls at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow at 8.

There will also be two games featuring the top eighth graders, with

girls starting at 3 p.m. and the boys at 4:30.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $8 for students and children.

The games have raised more than $500,000 for charity, including

the YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Orange Coast Scholarship Fund and

Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Pinto, the Daily Pilot’s Newport-Mesa Player of the Year, averaged

20.4 points and finished his four-year varsity career with 1,538

points. He led the team in rebounding, blocked shots, steals and

three-pointers (47).

Estancia finished the year 23-6 overall and won the Golden West

League championship at 11-1.

Young, a football and basketball Daily Pilot Dream Team selection,

led the Sailors’ hoops team at 17.4 points per game and helped

Newport reach the CIF quarterfinals. His inside presence helped him

lead the team in rebounding as Newport finished the year 17-10, 8-2

in the Sea View League.

The Sailors began the year 1-4, but went 16-6 after Young switched

over from football.

Miller led the Sailors with 12.3 points per contest. Puishys was

selected to the Dream Team.
