OCC entries march onward
Orange Coast College men’s tennis player Colby Morita advanced to
today’s singles quarterfinals, while two OCC men’s doubles teams are
also in today’s quarters at the Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis
tournament at Saddleback College.
Morito, the No. 5 seed, defeated Brian Valparaiso, 6-3, 6-1,
Thursday, to advance to today’s 10 a.m. date with No. 4-seeded Carlos
Catalan from College of the Desert.
Morita and Spencer Solomon, a Costa Mesa High product, earned
their doubles quarterfinal berth with a victory Tuesday.
The OCC doubles team of Hiroshi Muto and Scott Fielder defeated
Dan Loney and Sam Choe from Irvine Valley, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, in the
round of 16 Thursday to advance to today’s quarterfinals.
Fielder and Solomon were eliminated in the singles round of 16 for
the Pirates, coached by Glenn Morton, who has been named conference
Coach of the Year.
OCC women advance
* TENNIS: Top-seeded Michelle Esquivel of the Orange Coast College
women’s tennis team advanced to the singles final of the Orange
Empire Conference individual tournament after victories in the
quarterfinals and semifinals Thursday at Cypress College.
Esquivel will face second-seeded Amanda Varela of Saddleback at 2
p.m. today for the conference individual singles crown. OCC’s
unseeded Emily Paulson upset Saddleback’s fourth-seeded Meghan Ehlers
in the quarters before falling to Esquivel in the semis, while the
Pirates’ Jessica Rice advanced through the quarters and lost to
Varela in the semifinals.
OCC’s doubles teams of Esquivel and Rice, along with Paulson and
Rachel Sessum, advanced to the doubles semifinals, scheduled to begin
after the singles final today.
Sailors sweep Hawks
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team had 17
aces in its 25-14, 25-18, 25-10 Sea View League victory over visiting
Laguna Hills Thursday.
Brett Perrine had 10 kills to go with his three aces for the
Sailors while Brett Auer had five kills and seven aces.
The Sailors (9-9, 4-0 in league) are tied for first place with
Woodbridge in the Sea View League.
Doubles come through
* TENNIS: Estancia High’s boys tennis team claimed all nine
doubles sets and cruised to a 17-1 Golden West League victory over
host Ocean View Thursday.
David Do and Chase Raymond, along with the duos of Chris Alvergue
and Cesar Gonzalez and Mike Fennessey and Shane Thompson shined for
the Eagles (7-6, 6-2 in league), who have won six straight.
Scott Braunsdorf and Brad Fisher swept in singles. Fisher and
Braunsdorf improved to 22-2 and 21-3 on the season, respectively,
Coach Rachel de los Santos said.

Local trio moves on
* TENNIS: Newport Beach residents Alexa Glatch and Carsten Ball
each won quarterfinal matches in their respective divisions in the
38th Easter Bowl United States Tennis Association championships
Thursday at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs while Costa Mesa
resident Nelly Radeva will compete in a quarterfinal match today.
The top-seeded Glatch, 15, defeated Megan Alexander of Tyler,
Texas, 6-1, 6-0, in girls 18s singles and faces fifth-seeded Yasmin
Schnack from Sacramento, who upset third-seeded Eliz Plotkin of San
Francisco, 6-0, 3-0 (ret.).
Glatch, who won the girls 14s singles Easter Bowl title two years
ago, has lost just seven games since a three-set opening match
against Krista Damico.
Ball, the No. 2 seed, downed Stefan Hardy of Santa Maria, Calif.,
3-6, 7-5, 6-2, in boys 18s singles and takes on third-seeded Jesse
Levine of Boca Raton, Fla., in the semifinals, the furthest he has
gotten in this event. He reached the quarterfinals in the same
division last year.
Radeva has won all four of her matches in straight sets, including
two tiebreakers against her previous two opponents. She faces Joanne
Mather of Duluth, Ga., at 9 a.m. today.
CdM wins in eighth
* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team cashed in two
eighth-inning errors by visiting Calvary Chapel to earn a 3-2 Pacific
Coast League victory Thursday.
After committing four errors, that led to two unearned runs by the
Eagles, CdM started its winning rally with two out when Lauren Gega
reached on a fielding error by the third baseman.
Heather Lohrman followed with a single to left that got past the
left fielder for a two-base error, allowing Lohrman to score the
game-winner.
Michelle Tolfa, who struck out nine and surrendered just five
hits, got the pitching victory and joined Holly Van Hiel as a hitting
star.
Tolfa and Van Hiel were both 2 for 4 with second-inning RBIs to
help the Sea Kings (11-7, 2-1 in league) win their third straight.

* GOLF: Greg Les tallied a 1-under-par 34 to earn medalist laurels
and Estancia High’s boys golf team cruised to a 190-267 victory over
Westminster Thursday at Meadowlark Golf Course to remain unbeaten in
the Golden West League since entering nearly three years ago.
Ryan Gleason shot 37, while Pat Flannery (39), Garrett McMasters
(40) and Austin Serr (41) notched scores for the Eagles (9-8, 5-0 in
league).
Su medals in win
* GOLF: Sophomore David Su shot even par 35 to earn medalist
honors and lead the Corona del Mar High boys golf team to a 193-219
Pacific Coast League victory over visiting Calvary Chapel Thursday at
Newport Beach Country Club.
Su birdied the 143-yard par-3 fourth hole, shooting into the wind,
while senior Zach Rabinovich shot 38 for the Sea Kings (5-5, 3-3 in
league). Jamie Bloom (39), Jack Francis (40), Ben Wu (41) and Ben
Tilsen (41) all scored for CdM, currently in fourth place in league.
UCI closes with win
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team claimed five of six
singles matches and concluded the regular season with a 6-1 Big West
Conference victory over host UC Riverside Thursday.
Anna Bentzer, Becky Bernhard Jessica Broadfoot and Inna Agababian
all won their singles matches in straight sets for the Anteaters
(12-9), who compete in the conference championships beginning
Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Foothill edges Sailors
* TENNIS: Host Newport Harbor High won all nine singles sets, but
Foothill claimed all the doubles matches and edged the Sailors on
games, 77-73, in a Sea View League boys tennis match Thursday.
Sophomore Jake Fleming, freshman John Hutchinson and senior Dylan
Espley-Jones all won three sets for the Sailors (4-7, 2-2 in league),
who were tied, 3-3, and, 6-6, with the Knights through the first and
second rounds, respectively.
Coast rally falls short
* BASEBALL: Host Fullerton College scored four runs in the first
two innings and held off a late charge by Orange Coast to post a 4-3
Orange Empire Conference baseball victory Thursday.
OCC catcher Josh Banda stole home with two outs in the top of the
ninth inning to cut the lead to 4-3. With a runner at third, Hornet
reliever Chris Garcia induced a groundout to short to end the
contest.
Stephen Schneider, who went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run
scored, slammed his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in
the seventh for Coast (16-13-1, 7-5-1 in the OEC).
Knights catch Tars
* GOLF: Newport Harbor High lost sole possession of second place
in the Sea View League by falling, 188-194, to visiting Foothill in a
boys golf match at Big Canyon Country Club Thursday.
Foothill’s Andrew Gunson shot 2-under-par 34 to earn medalist
honors, allowing the Knights (11-6, 4-2 in league) to pull into a
second-place tie with the Sailors (9-7, 4-2).
Davis Pemstein and Spencer Quinn (both 37) paced the Sailors,
whose scorers also included Paul Neff (38), Brandon Sowers (40) and
Rhett Palmer (42).
