McKendry paces Estancia
Senior Bryce McKendry tripled in the jumps and six other Eagles won
individual events to key a 74-53 Golden West League victory over host
Saddleback Thursday.
McKendry topped the field in the high jump, long jump and triple
jump.
Junior C.J. Buchmann won the 1,600 meters and was second in the
400 and 800 to help the Eagles improve to 4-0 in league and drop
Saddleback to 2-2.
Estancia visits Santa Ana in a showdown for first place Thursday.
Sophomore Ryan Whites won the 110 high hurdles and was second in
the 300 intermediate hurdles and the triple jump, while senior Ian
Morton won the discus throw (a personal-record 131 feet) and was
second in the shot put.
David Moreno (shot put), Aldo Capistran (100 and 400 relay) and
Ernesto Castaneda (3,200) were also event winners for the Eagles.
The Estancia girls lost, 104-19, as sophomore Jai Hellmich (4-10
in the high jump) was the Eagles’ only event winner.
CdM boys, girls win
The Corona del Mar High track and field team stomped over Calvary
Chapel as the girls won, 98-24, and the boys took a 106-16 Pacific
Coast League victory.
The boys team swept six events while the girls won five.
Takai Sakai won the 200 meters in 23.1 and the 400 in 54.4. Shawn
Engmann tied for first in the 100 (12.1) and also the 110 high
hurdles (17.2), while also winning the 300 intermediate hurdles in
44.0.
Spencer Aguilar and Andrew Wong were also double-winners in the
110 high hurdles (17.2), high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), long jump
(19-0) and triple jump (40-3), respectively.
Tiffany Liu was a winner in four events to boost the score for the
girls. Liu won the 100 hurdles in 16.1, 300 hurdles in 52.3, long
jump with a 15-4 and triple jump with 34 5 3/4 .
The girls won the 400 relay as Alex Tobiessen, Kelly Morgan, Megan
Benbow and Cassandra Skaggs finished in 51.8.
Sailors joust Knights
Newport Harbor High’s boys and girls track and field teams swept
host Foothill in a Sea View League dual meet Thursday. The boys won,
89-46, while the girls won, 97-39.
Junior Sean Campos and senior Nick St. Andre led the boys (1-1 in
league) with 15 points apiece. Campos won the 110-meter high hurdles
in 16.5 seconds, the long jump in 19 feet, 8 3/4 inches and the
triple jump in 41-8 1/4 . St. Andre won the 800 in 2:02.2, the 1,600
in 4:37.9 and the 3,200 in 10:17.2.
Junior Chase Nelson won the 200 in 24.5 and the 400 in 54.7, while
Trevor Theriot won the shot put (52-10 3/4 ) and Bo Taylor won the
discus (168-7 1/2 ).
The girls were led by four double-winners.
Senior Jessica Robson won the 100 hurdles (16.9) and high jump
(5-2), while Laura Clayton was victorious in the long jump (16-2 1/4
) as well as triple jump (33-6 1/2 ).
Whitney Blue won the 800 in 2:21.6 and the 1,600 in 5:13.2.
Hannah Bearden topped the field in the 100 in 13.2 and 200 in
27.6.
