Ocean View High School baseball coach Aaron Kavanagh called Santa Ana
High School a “tough place” for a team to play. And that’s where the
Seahawks had to open their Golden West League schedule.
Ocean View, however, had few problems with a young Saints team.
The Seahawks launched their league schedule with an impressive 10-0
victory, a win that Kavanagh said was “all about Alex Burnett.”
All the senior did was hit a grand slam in the first inning, and
then proceed to throw a complete game. Burnett, a senior
right-hander, threw a one-hit shutout and recorded 12 strikeouts.
“This is a tough game to play, but they are young, and it is nice
to get a win like this on the road,” Kavanagh said.
Also having big games offensively were Jeff Roth, who went three
for four with a solo home run, and Jason Walker, who also hit a solo
homer.
Ocean View’s offense continued to run in high gear, and its
defense and pitching were stingy in the Seahawks’ next outing, a 7-0
blanking of visiting Westminster.
“These games are usually close because of the rivalry, but we kept
the pressure on them and the wheels came off,” Kavanagh said.
This time, it was Roth who threw a complete-game victory. The
senior right-hander allowed two hits and struck out four.
James Kang went three for four with a pair of RBIs and John Vega
went two for three and scored twice.
The Seahawks are now 11-5 overall and 3-0 in league. They played
at Orange on Wednesday and meet Costa Mesa at home Friday.
In Sunset League baseball, the league showed its balance as the
three local schools split their last two games.
Edison posted a big win by coming up with an 11-run fifth inning
en route to an 11-1 victory over Marina. Chad Blauer, Dane Kaylor and
Frankie Mead each had two RBIs for the Chargers.
Previously, Edison was edged by host Los Alamitos, 6-5. Garrett
DeGrazio hit a two-run home run for the Chargers in that game.
Before losing at Edison, Marina had rallied to hand Esperanza its
first league defeat, 8-7. Luis Gonzalez smashed a three-run home run
in the second inning to highlight the Vikings hitting attack.
Huntington Beach won at Fountain Valley, 8-3, as Hank Conger
homered twice and finished with four RBI. The Oilers also lost to
visiting Esperanza, 6-4. Conger hit a three-run homer in the game and
finished with three RBIs.
Huntington stepped out of Sunset League play to compete at the
Wienerschnitzel Invitational and defeated University, 9-1, in a
second-round game on Monday.
Jordan Marquette tripled, doubled and drove in three runs, Conger
doubled and had two RBIs, and Jeff Van Doornum had two RBIs. Senior
pitcher Chris Palmer picked up his first win of the season.
In a first round game, Huntington fell to Capistrano Valley, 5-3.
In Sunset League diving, Fountain Valley defeated Esperanza, 10-6;
Edison defeated Huntington Beach, 13-0; and Marina downed Los
Alamitos, in boys’ competition at Marina.
Divers who have qualified for the upcoming CIF-Southern Section
Swimming and Diving Championships included J.P. Salgado of Edison and
Eric Kartchner of Marina.
In the girls’ competition, Fountain Valley blanked Esperanza,
13-0; Huntington Beach beat Edison, 10-6; and Marina defeated Los
Alamitos, 13-3.
Marina’s Jaclyn Funke (279.65), Shayna Solomon (195.70) and
Chelsea Hunthausen (180.35) and Selby Werner of Huntington Beach
(208.20) have all qualified for the Southern Section meet.
