Police: Man dies of self-inflicted gunshot
A Huntington Beach man shot himself with a handgun after a
standoff in the parking lot of Newland School on Sunday, police said.
Police responded at 2 p.m. when a family member called and told
them that 43 year-old Scott Alan Chapman had been drinking and left
the house distraught and possibly armed with a gun, Lt. Dave Bunetta
said.
Officers checked the area and found Chapman in his car in a nearby
parking lot, police said. Officers attempted to contact him and get
him to come out of the car, but he refused, Bunetta said.
The man then drove away, headed northbound on Magnolia Street, and
police followed in a low-speed pursuit, Bunetta said.
The car stopped in the parking lot of Newland School, and again
police tried to get Chapman to come out of the car. After several
hours of talking with him on a cellphone, Chapman shot himself,
Bunetta said.
He was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, and later
pronounced dead. Police are not releasing the details of the phone
conversation, Bunetta said.
