Quilt in the works at Davis Elementary

Fourth-graders at Davis Elementary School in Costa Mesa are

planning to enter a quilt into the Youth Expo, which is April 29 to

May 1 at the Orange Country Fairgrounds.

For the second consecutive year, teacher Shannon Spining-Shepard

assigned her students to research a commodity -- this year avocados

-- and present their findings to classmates.

The students are designing and embroidering patches. They will be

sewn together and submitted as a group project at the Youth Expo.

Faith and feminism

is the topic of speech

Author Helen LaKelly Hunt is scheduled to speak today from 1 to 2

p.m. at the Newport-Mesa Christian Center, 2599 Newport Blvd.

The Vanguard Center for Women’s Studies is bringing Hunt to talk

about faith and feminism, and how the two come into play in

contemporary culture.

Hunt has spent years studying the religious roots of feminism.

Along with her husband, she has penned several books on building

healthy marriages.

In her latest book, “Faith and Feminism: A Holy Alliance,” she

shares the stories of five women of faith.

Hunt is founder and president of the Sister Fund, a private

women’s fund that intends to empower women.

She has helped to found a number of other women’s funding

institutions, including the Dallas Women’s Foundation, the New York

Women’s Foundation and the National Network of Women’s Funds.

Admission to the event is free.
