Peggy Goldwater Clay, Julie Jacobson and Ronna Shipman were
recognized as Orange County’s 2005 Women of Distinction by the Girl
Scout Council of Orange County at a luncheon April 5.
The event honors outstanding Orange County women whose lives
personify the mission, principles and goals of Girl Scouting. The
event raised nearly $35,000, which will benefit Girl Scouts at
Project HOPE, the Girl Scout Council’s outreach program for girls
whose families are homeless.
Clay, a Newport Beach resident, is a recipient of the UCI Medal,
the university’s highest honor, for her work with the Brain Imaging
Center at the school. She is also on the board of a number of
organizations, including KOCE-TV and the Barry Goldwater Scholarship
Excellence in Education Foundation.
Shipman who lives in Newport Coast, recently retired as vice
president of community relations for the Orange County Register. She
has chaired or founded numerous programs around Orange County,
including the 2003 Pacific Symphony Gala.
Jacobson was awarded the Girl Scout Council’s “Living Treasure”
award for her 34 years of involvement with Girl Scouting. She became
a Girl Scout leader when her daughters were Junior Girl Scouts, and
she continued to fulfill many different volunteer roles, even after
her daughters were grown. In addition to her contributions to Girl
Scouts, Jacobson was recognized as Hoag Hospital’s 2005 Auxiliary
Volunteer of the Year.
At the same luncheon, 9-year old Costa Mesa Girl Scouts Mikayla
Gruenbeck and twin sisters Madeline and Jennifer Jones stood in front
of an audience of 250 women and men to make their very first speech,
and the appreciative audience rewarded them with a standing ovation.
The girls, who referred to themselves as the “little women of
distinction,” told the audience that they wanted to grow up to be
just like the three women being honored that day. The audience soon
learned that the third- and fourth-graders are already on their way
to their goal, having devoted 80 hours each to community service in
the past year and earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The following local students at UC Santa Barbara were honored for
achieving excellence in their academic work during the winter
quarter.
From Costa Mesa: Kimberley Anne Dootson, Kimberly Ann Isbell and
Alyssa Lyn Reehl.
From Newport Beach: Caitlin Andrews, Robert Spencer Coldren,
Elizabeth Ellen Erickson, Nikola Christine Hendrickson, Casey J.
Ibbetson, Heather Nicole McKay, Michael Dean Schuman, Natalie
Kristine Sims, Christine Heather Speer, Sarah Elizabeth Susson and
Joseph Michael Weiland.
