“Traffic: What’s being done about it?,” will be the topic of the

monthly Speak Up Newport general membership meeting. Public Works

Director, Steve Badum, will discuss the current local traffic

situation with a focus on the recent Traffic Synchronization Study

and plans for implementing the changes recommended as a result of the

study. Questions and answers will follow the presentation. The

The 16th annual Southern California Spring Garden Show welcomes

garden enthusiasts to view creative outdoor living spaces, dining

rooms and entertaining areas created by landscape architects,

designers and horticulture students. Purchase unique items from more

than 75 garden lifestyle vendors and hear top experts share their

garden secrets and debut their garden books. Children will enjoy

viewing the miniature landscapes designed by children, making crafts

Helen LaKelly Hunt will lead a discussion on spirituality and

feminism. Hunt and her husband, Harville Hendrix, a former pastoral

counselor, have co-authored several books on building healthy

marriages. Their goal is to transform the world, one relationship at

a time.Helen is committed to bridging the gap between faith and

feminism. In Ms. Hunt’s new book, Faith and Feminism: a Holy

Alliance, she examines the lives of five women who exhibited their

faith and strength throughout their incredible lives: Emily

Dickinson, Teresa of Avila, Sojourner Truth, Lucretia Mott, and

Girl Scouts Go Skater: Ten

Junior Girl Scouts will be in helmets and wrist guards while

learning the basic skills of skateboarding. Through balance and

weight distribution, the girls will grow confident in their mental

and physical capabilities as they master the art of becoming a

skater. The event will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Girl Scout

A “Night in New Orleans,” a

gala evening where the Second Annual Jade Award presentations will

this year honor Dick and Ann Sim and Tom Nielsen, will be held at

A fundraising event benefiting the American Cancer Society will be

The 27th annual “Celebrate

Jeff Spaetzel and Adam Dabrowski are going to be “Pedaling for a

Cure” by riding their bicycles from Los Angeles to Chicago, Ill.,

with the vision of raising $100,000 on behalf of Cure Autism Now.

Spaetzel and Dabrowski invite the public to attend the send-off

ceremony scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Newport Beach Pier.

Mayor Steve Bromberg will conduct the official send off ceremony for

the ride that will coincide with National Autism Awareness month.

Members of the Riverside Bicycle Club, Cycling Connection, and Palm

Desert cycling clubs will be riding along side Spaetzel and Dabrowski

as they leave the Newport Beach area. Cure Autism Now (CAN), the

organization that Pedal for a Cure benefits, is a foundation created

in 1995 to bring together parents, researchers and physicians who

have committed themselves to accelerating the pace at which research,

outreach and education are conducted. Spaetzel and Dabrowski are

funding the 2,400-mile ride themselves in order to make sure every

penny raised goes to Cure Autism Now. Information:

The Ecophilians, the environmental stewardship committee at St.
