Three-run rally in ninth lifts Orange Coast
Sophomore second baseman Bobby Slater drove in the game-winning run
with the bases loaded to cap a three-run ninth inning to give Orange
Coast College a 7-6 Orange Empire Conference baseball victory over
visiting Fullerton Tuesday.
Josh Banda led off the ninth inning with a solo home run for the
Bucs (16-12-1, 7-4-1 in the OEC). Back-to-back singles and a hit
batsman loaded the bases for Slater’s dramatic hit down the
left-field line.
Ball, Glatch advance
* TENNIS: Newport Beach residents Carsten Ball and Alexa Glatch
each won their round of 32 matches in straight sets Tuesday and
advance to today’s round of 16 in their respective divisions of the
38th Easter Bowl United States Tennis Association national spring
championships at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs.
Glatch, the top seed in girls 18s singles, defeated Krista Damico
of Parker, Colo., 6-1, 6-0, and faces Jennifer Stevens from Miami at
11:45 a.m. today. Ball, the No. 2 seed in boys 18s singles, downed
Michael Sroczynski of Chatham, N.J., 6-2, 6-4, and faces Leo
Rosenberg of Manhattan, Kansas, at 1:30 p.m. today.
UCI tops Aztecs
* BASEBALL: UC Irvine’s baseball team topped host San Diego State,
15-2, in a nonconference game Tuesday. Mark Wagner was 4 for 6 at the
plate with two RBIs for the Anteaters (16-15), while Brett Dalton was
3 for 5 with two RBIs.
Singles sparks Eagles
* TENNIS: Scott Braunsdorf and Bradley Fisher each swept their
three singles matches to help lead the host Estancia High boys tennis
team to a 12-6 nonleague victory over visiting Los Amigos Tuesday.
Cesar Gonzalez and Chris Alvergue also swept at No. 1 doubles for
the Eagles (5-6), who have won four straight and five of six overall.
Sea Kings ride Calvary
* BASEBALL: Senior Ben Maggard allowed no earned runs with five
hits and three strikeouts in going the distance for the Corona del
Mar High baseball team in a 5-1 Pacific Coast League victory over
host Calvary Chapel Tuesday.
Senior Tyler Lance was 2 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs for
the Sea Kings (12-4, 5-1 in league). .
Lightning strikes
* TENNIS: Sage Hill School’s boys tennis team bulldozed its way to
a 16-2 Academy League victory over visiting Fairmont Prep Tuesday at
Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
Sophomore Martin Park swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1
singles for the Lightning (7-5, 3-0 in league), while freshman Karam
Sethi won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
Pirates move on
* TENNIS: Orange Coast College men’s tennis players Colby Morita,
Jared Hayley, Spencer Solomon, Hiroshi Muto, Victor Jacobs and Scott
Fielder all advanced after the first day of competition of the Orange
Empire Conference individual tennis tournament Tuesday at Laguna
Niguel Racquet Club.
The fifth-seeded Morita, 10th-seeded Solomon and 13th-seeded
Hayley each won their second-round matches to advance to the round of
16 Thursday.
Sea Kings sweep
* VOLLEYBALL: Freshman Gus Ellis nailed eight kills and two blocks
to lead the Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team past host
Calvary Chapel, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15, in a Pacific Coast League
contest Tuesday.
Senior Kevin Welch tallied six kills while brother Tom Welch had
five. Austin Brawner and Blaine Nielsen hammered four kills each for
the Sea Kings (17-5, 3-0 in league).
Estancia splits meet
* TRACK AND FIELD: The Estancia High boys track and field team
defeated visiting Ocean View, 93-30, while the Estancia girls lost,
66-61, in a Golden West League dual meet Tuesday.
Senior Bryce McKendry and junior C.J. Buchmann both won three
events to lead the boys charge, as McKendry won the high jump (5
feet, 8 inches), long jump (21-7) and triple jump (40-7). Buchmann
won the 400 meters in 55.8 seconds, the 800 in 2:15 and the 1,600 in
5:00.
Sailors roll past Hawks
* TENNIS: All three singles players swept their sets to lead the
Newport Harbor High boys tennis team to a 12-6 Sea View League
victory over visiting Laguna Hills Tuesday.
John Hutchinson won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for the
Sailors (4-6, 2-1 in league). .
Lions sweep Azusa
* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team swept host Azusa
Pacific, 3-0, and, 9-2, in a doubleheader Tuesday.
Sage still winless
* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team remains
winless this year after losing at Brethren Christian, 25-12, 25-16,
25-5, in an Academy League match.
