Amateurs and pros make for a ‘Classic’

The sixth annual Newport Harbor High Surf Classic, featuring amateurs
and professionals, will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April
16-17 at 56th Street in Newport Beach.
The surf contest is open to the public and includes competition in
elementary (kindergarten through fifth grade), middle (sixth through
eighth grade) and high school divisions.
The five open divisions include men’s short board, women’s short
and long board, long board, bodyboard and an expression air show.
Surfers of any age can compete in the open divisions.
Newport Beach standout surfers Josh Hoyer and Geoff Moysa will be
in attendance.
Hoyer won the air show division at the Op Newport Classic in
September, also held at 56th Street, while Moysa claimed the men’s
open division in the 2003 Surf Classic.This is the primary fundraiser
for the Newport Harbor surf team. All proceeds from the event will
help support the team.
Entry fee is $25 ($30 beach sign up) and includes a logo T-shirt
and lunch on the second day.
Trophies and prizes from the sponsors and local donors will be
awarded to the top six finishers in each division.
Numerous raffles will be held during the two day event, concluding
with the awards ceremony on Sunday at 3 p.m.
