The power the Costa Mesa High aquatics program has was on full

display in the Mustangs’ dismantling of visiting Orange Lutheran

Friday in a nonleague meet.

The girls won, 91-67, and Mesa boys triumphed, 99-64.

All of this despite an absent coach and swimmers participating in

events for the first time.

Head coach Tim Postiff was in Missouri, so assistant Amy Lewis was

in charge.

“It’s spring break, this is not a league meet, so this is an

opportunity for our swimmers to try different events,” Lewis said

during the meet. “This is just a fun meet.”

Dominating powerful Orange Lutheran added to enjoyment, even

though the ultimate goal of the meet for Mesa was to prepare for the

league finals in the beginning of May.

Carley Millian, Annie Le, Allyson Harris and Talhia Nunez combined

to win the 200-yard medley relay in two minutes, nine seconds. It was

one of eight first-place finishes for the girls.

Millian, a senior, also came in second in the 100 butterfly

(1:10.40), 100 breaststroke (1:18.53) and was the leadoff swimmer for

the victorious 400 freestyle relay (4:09.65).

Le was first in the 50 free (27.24), 100 breast (1:16.41)and

anchored the 400 free relay.

Harris grabbed first in the 200 free (2:09.00), 500 free (5:50.87)

an was a member of the 400 free relay.

Nunez was second in the 200 IM (2:37.05) and third in the 100 fly

(1:12.43).

Christine Twohig also came in first in the 100 free (1:03.65) for

Mesa.

“This was an opportunity for people to see if they can be

successful in other strokes,” Lewis said. The boys had six

first-place finishes, including Adam Douglas in the 200 free

(1:52.03), Kyle Thorsness in the 50 free (22.71), Evan Spencer in the

100 fly (56.21) and the 100 back (1:03.04) as well as victories in

the 200 free relay (1:33.09) and the 400 free relay (3:34.61).

Thorsness, who usually swims in the 100 free and 100 back, also

came in second in the 500 free in 5:17.97.

Thorsness was not surprised by his win in the 50 free.

Throsness also anchored the 200 and 400 free relays, which also

included Douglas, Spencer and James Fowler.
