The host Estancia High boys volleyball swept Santa Ana, 25-16, 25-14,
25-13, Friday to remain the top contender in the Golden West League
with a 5-0 league record.
Junior brothers Scott and Shaun Markley led the Eagles (11-6) with
14 kills apiece, while junior Dallas Kopp added 12 kills. Senior setter Trevor Holmes had 32 assists.
Santa Ana (5-3, 3-1) remains third in league while Costa Mesa is
second. Estancia visits Saddleback at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Pitching sparks Sage
* SOFTBALL: Senior pitcher Rebecca Hembarsky pitched a
complete-game three-hitter with six strikeouts and the Sage Hill
School softball team allowed one unearned run in a 4-1 victory over
host Fairmont Friday.
Sage (5-3) scored four runs in the fifth inning to pull away, as
junior Alison Gonzalez and Hembarksy were both 2 for 3 at the plate.
The Lightning visit Estancia at 4 p.m. Monday in a makeup game.

Sage Hill tops rival
* TENNIS: Only one doubles set was lost as the Sage Hill School
boys tennis team cruised to a 13-5 victory over visiting Academy
League rival St. Margaret’s Friday at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
The doubles teams of Dan Chin and Tyler Ross, as well as Michael
Garrison and Conrad Whitaker, swept their sets for the Lightning
(6-5, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division
V. Karam Sethi and Robert Wee won two of three doubles sets.
Tristan Cordier and Martin Park both won two sets at Nos. 1 and 2
singles, respectively. Sage plays host to Fairmont Prep Tuesday.

Leapaldt leads Lions
* TRACK AND FIELD: Sophomore Megan Leapaldt finished no worse than
third in all five events she competed in for the Vanguard University
women’s track and field team at the Coast Six-Way meet Friday at
Orange Coast College.
Leapaldt finished second in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.39
seconds, second in the long jump (16 feet, 8 1/2 inches), second in
the triple jump with a Vanguard record 35-7 1/2 and helped lead the
400 and 1,600 relay teams to first and third finishes, respectively.
Erik Van Aken won the 200 for the men in 22.96 while placing
second in the 100 in 11.39. Brandon Shaw topped the 400 in 49.56 and
helped the 1,600 relay team to a first-place finish.
Hornets sting ‘Eaters
* TENNIS: The Sacramento State University women’s tennis team,
ranked 34th nationally, improved to 15-4 overall with a 5-2 victor
over host UC Irvine Friday.
The Hornets, who have won 13 of 14, swept the three doubles
matches for the doubles point and lost two singles matches.
Freshmen Jessica Broadfoot and Inna Agababian, who defeated
Roberta Fessenko, 6-7, 6-4, (13-11) earned singles victories for UCI
(10-9), which hosts UC Davis at 2:30 p.m. today in its final
regular-season home match.
VU falls to Biola
* BASEBALL: The visiting Biola University baseball team scored two
runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead and eventually defeat
Vanguard, 3-2, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.
Vanguard (12-19, 8-9 in the GSAC) reliever Robert Klein entered
the game in the sixth inning and threw four scoreless innings with
six hits, but the Lions couldn’t muster the offense to pull ahead.
Isaac Salazar went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI for Vanguard,
while Todd Merz and Joseph Candelaria were both 1 for 3 with doubles.

Lightning in slump
* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team fell to
0-8 on the season following a 25-23, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18 loss to host
Whitney in an Academy League match Friday.
Sage (0-2 in league) was led by junior Mike Morgan with six kills.
Freshman Carl Hillgren had 18 assists at the setter position, while
Jamie McGee, Jake Lazere and Will Rogan tallied four kills each.
OCC tops Saddleback
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College men’s tennis team defeated
Saddleback, 6-3, Thursday in the Orange Empire Conference
regular-season finale.
The win lifted the Pirates (12-3, 10-3) into a second-place tie
with the Gauchos, who defeated the Pirates, 6-3, in their first
meeting.
Colby Morita (No. 1), Spencer Solomon (No. 2), Jared Haley (No. 3)
and Victor Jacobs (No. 5) were singles winners for the Pirates.
Sage splits meet
* TRACK AND FIELD: The Sage Hill School track and field teams
split victories in an Academy League dual meet Thursday at Saddleback
College. The boys won, 73-62, while the girls lost, 74-62.
Junior Chris Neale led the boys, winning the 100 meters in 11.9
seconds, the 200 in 24.8, the long jump in 17 feet, 3 inches, while
also running on the winning 400 relay team. Zach Chandy, Tyler Ellis
and Chris Lee rounded out the 400 relay team while Ellis, Eric Good,
Ian Dull and Tim Lefler made up the winning 1,600 relay team (3:51.3).
Lefler won the 400 in 54.6, Chandy won the 800 in 2:11.3, Connor
Rose topped the 1,600 in 5:02.9 and Mike Voge won the 3,200 in
11:10.9.
On the girls side, Kelsey Rose won the 100 in 13.5 and the 200 in
28.2. Erica Faris won the 800 in 2:41.2, while Laura Gordon won the
100 hurdles (17.6), long jump (14-11) and triple jump (33-2). Amy
Werblin won the shot put (25-2) and discus (77-1).
Cougars tame Lions
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team fell, 7-2, to
host Azusa Pacific Friday in a Golden State Athletic Conference
match.
The top-ranked Cougars (17-3, 7-0 in conference)swept the doubles
action and won four of the six singles matches.
Dieter Weislmaier and Cyril Contry were the only winners for the
Lions (11-4, 5-2).
VU holds off Azusa
* TENNIS: The host NAIA second-ranked Vanguard University women’s
tennis team held off No. 4 Azusa Pacific, rallying from a 2-1 deficit
to win, 7-2, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday.
Vanguard (16-3, 11-0 in the GSAC) took five of six singles matches
as Olga Hlushchanka (No. 1), Jenny Edner (2), Amy Brown (3), Alena
Votavova (5) and Olivia Amstad (6) defeated their opponents.
Anae, Fullen honored
* WATER POLO: Jordan Anae was named Co-MVP and Brittany Fullen was
named goalie of the year for the Pacific Coast League after leading
the Corona del Mar High girls water polo team to its fourth straight
CIF division title.
Anae led CdM with 65 goals and Fullen had 221 saves. Laguna
Beach’s Addison Doud is the other Co-MVP.
Joining Anae and Fullen on the first team is fellow senior Katlin
Kubas, junior Camille Hewko and sophomore Katie Indvik.
Second-team all-leaguers include junior Ashley Chandler and
sophomore Cari Levine.
