CdM halts streak

The Corona del Mar High baseball team scarred Rubidoux pitcher Daniel
Gutierrez’s perfect ERA Tuesday after the Sea Kings topped the
visitors, 9-4, in the third round of pool play in the Pride of the
Coast tournament.
Gutierrez, who hadn’t given up an earned run and was 3-0 in 32
innings pitched -- with 37 strikeouts -- gave up seven runs in five
innings, in front of about six Major League scouts, CdM Coach John
Emme said.
Some of Gutierrez’s fastballs were clocking in at 89 mph, Emme
said.
Senior pitcher Ben Maggard went the distance for the Sea Kings
(10-4), allowing four runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Senior
Wess Presson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while senior Tyler Ray was 1
for 3 with two RBIs and sophomore Jake Lemmerman was 2 for 3.
CdM visits Newport Harbor at noon today in a third-place
tournament matchup. Rubidoux, from Riverside, falls to 10-4.
Costa Mesa tops Ventura
* BASEBALL: Senior pitcher Andrew Sanford went the distance for
the Costa Mesa High baseball team, giving up four earned runs with
six strikeouts and no walks in the Mustangs’ 12-9 defeat of Ventura
in the third round of pool play in the Pride of the Coast tournament
Tuesday.
Sanford hit one double in going 3 for 5 at the plate with two RBIs
for the Mustangs (7-6-1), while senior Ryan Szwast was 3 for 4 with
four RBIs. Senior Dylan Hunter was 3 for 3, with three runs scored.
Costa Mesa plays for third place at noon today against Rubidoux at
Corona del Mar High.
Sailors shut down, fall
* BASEBALL: Jermaine Curtis went 3 for 4 with a double, home run
and two runs scored to help the A.B. Miller High baseball team send
host Newport Harbor to a 4 -0 loss in a Pride of the Coast tournament
semifinal loss Tuesday.
Luis Espirita tossed a three-hitter and struck out four Sailors
(6-8). Newport hosts CdM at noon today for third place.
Taylor Young, Jeff Sanchez and Sean Rowe each singled for Newport.
Estancia falls again
* BASEBALL: Estancia High’s baseball team dropped its 11th
consecutive game with an 11-3 loss to host Peninsula in the third
round of pool play in the Pride of the Coast tournament Tuesday at
Corona del Mar High.
Junior Evan Van Geem went 2 for 4 at the plate for Estancia
(0-11), with a run scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Blake Pinto
was 2 for 3.
Estancia plays Ventura at 3 p.m. today at CdM for seventh place.
