Wells gets nod
Zach Wells, who starred at Newport Harbor High and then for UCLA,
will start his third professional game when the MetroStars host Real
Salt Lake in the Major League Soccer opener for both teams at Giants
Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., at 4 p.m. Pacific time today.
The 6-foot-2, 187-pound Wells fills in for Jonny Walker, the
MetroStars’ starter since 2003 who had surgery in November to repair
a torn rotator cuff.
Wells, drafted with the 21st pick in the MLS SuperDraft prior to
the 2004 season, made four saves while allowing four goals in his two
starts last season, in which the MetroStars went 1-1.
MetroStars’ Coach Bob Bradley told reporters an exact return date
for Walker is uncertain.
Wells, 24, set the UCLA career record with 269 saves and was named
College Cup Defensive Most Valuable Player during the Bruins’
national championship run in 2002.
