South All-Star nominees

Nominations for the South, which will compete against the top seniors

from the North in the Orange County All-Star football game, scheduled

July 8 at Orange Coast College, include 14 Newport-Mesa standouts.

Newport Harbor High senior running back and linebacker Trever

Theriot, the CIF Southern Section Division VI Co-Offensive Player of

the Year, is joined on the list by four more Sailors, four from

Corona del Mar, four from Estancia and one from Sage Hill.

Also among the candidates from Newport Harbor, which won the Sea

View League title and advanced to the CIF Division VI title game, are

quarterback Kasey Peters, receiver Spencer Link, receiver-safety Alex

Orth and fullback-middle linebacker Thomas Martin. All were All-CIF

honorees.

Candidates from CdM are receiver-defensive back Kevin Welch and

running back Wess Presson, each an All-CIF Division IX performer, as

well as linebacker John Shanahan and quarterback Tom Welch.

Vying to represent Estancia are two-way lineman Ian Morton,

running back-linebacker Bryce McKendry, receiver-defensive back Geo

Macias and receiver-linebacker Ryan Sanford.

Stephen Hancock, a tight end, is the lone nominee from Sage Hill.

The top 36 players will be chosen to represent the South, and no

more than three from any one school can be selected (with the

exception of one wild-card pick and the inclusion of a kicker that

will only kick in the game).

The South will be coached by Jim O’Connell, who led Tesoro to a

CIF Division IX title.

Proceeds from the game, organized by the Brea Lions Club, go to

several charities.
