CdM in semifinals

The tournament-host boys tennis team had no trouble with its first

two opponents in the Corona del Mar national high school invitational

Friday, as the Sea Kings cruised to 7-2 wins over Menlo of Atherton,

Calif. and Horace Mann of New York in the first round and

quarterfinals at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club and Park Newport.

The third-seeded Sea Kings (8-0) advance to play second-seeded

Santa Barbara in the semifinals at 11 a.m. today at Balboa Bay Club

Racquet Club. The championship match and third-place match (CdM will

play in either) will be at 3 p.m. at Palisades Tennis Club.

Senior Spencer Reitz won both sets at the No. 2 singles position

Friday in undefeated fashion (8-0) in the eight-game pro-set format

(six singles games, three doubles), while senior Wesley Miller,

freshman Fabian Mathews and sophomore Ryan Caughren won both of their

sets.

The doubles teams of Miller and Matt Chou, as well as Mathews and

Caughren, won both of their sets Friday also.

Fourth-seeded Woodbridge advanced to the other semifinal match and

will play Los Gatos (Calif), which upset top-seeded and CIF Southern

Section Division I top-ranked Harvard-Westlake. The Sea Kings are

ranked No. 4, Santa Barbara is No. 2 and Woodbridge is No. 3.

‘Stangs edge Newport

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team went in

to hostile territory and played tough, but eventually lost at Mira

Costa, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21, Friday in a nonleague match.

“Even though we lost, I think this was the best we’ve played all

year,” Coach Dan Glenn said.

The Sailors, who fall to 6-8, fell behind early in the first game

but battled back for the win. The second and forth games were seesaw

battles throughout with Newport trailing most of the way in the third

game to the host Mustangs, who are ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern

Section Division I.

Brett Perrine led the Sailors with 22 kills. He also added five

blocks and two service aces.

Freshman Kyle Caldwell continued to shine, registering 10 kills

and three blocks.

Bret Auer had five kills and Parker Stevens finished with three.

Ted Slater dished out 41 assists to go with his six kills and five

digs.

Newport Harbor plays at Irvine Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. in a Se View

League match.

Estancia sweeps Lions

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team swept

visiting Westminster, 25-13, 25-23, 25-12, in a Golden West League

match Friday.

Junior Scott Markley tallied a match-high 17 kills to lead the

Eagles (9-6, 3-0 in league), while junior Dallas Kopp accounted for

14 kills. Senior Trevor Holmes had 35 assists and junior Ian Lamb had

seven digs.

Estancia, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division III,

visits Costa Mesa at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Mann represents U.S.

* WATER POLO: Former Corona del Mar High water polo player John

Mann was selected to the U.S. national men’s water polo team headed

to a FINA World Championships qualification tournament in Mexico City

next month, it was announced Thursday.

Mann, who was formerly selected to the U.S. Junior National men’s

team while at CdM, led the Sea Kings to a CIF Southern Section

championship-game appearance in 2002. He scored 10 goals for Team USA

at the Junior World Championships in 2003.

Currently a sophomore at Cal, Mann has scored 22 goals for the

Golden Bears this season.

Foothill edges Tars

* BASEBALL: The visiting Newport Harbor High baseball team tied

the score at 1 in the top of the seventh inning, but Foothill scored

the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning to win, 2-1, in a Sea

View League contest Friday.

Foothill (6-4, 2-1 in league) hit a double in the seventh,

advanced the runner to third on a sacrifice fly and scored on a wild

pitch to clinch the game.

P.J. Errington and Chris Thompson hits singles in the seventh, and

the Sailors (3-7, 0-4) loaded the bases after two walks. But Foothill

escaped allowing just one run.

Senior Patrick Keehan finished 2 for 3 at the plate, while

Errington was 2 for 3 and a run scored, and Thompson was 2 for 2.

Follmer repeats

* JET SKIING: Newport Beach resident Mike Follmer, with partner

Billy Womack, won the Mark Hahn Memorial Havasu Team 300, the world’s

longest continuous personal watercraft race, for a second time in

Lake Havasu, Ariz., March 5.

Follmer, 49, and Womack rode a R&D; Factory Yamaha GP 1300 R to

victory in five hours, 16 minutes on the 6 1/4 -mile race course,

spanning 300 miles.

They finished in one hour, 45 minutes ahead of the second-place

team of Cheng Leu and Jon Casner.
