Laguna records 9-8 win

In its final nonleague game of the season, the Laguna Beach High
baseball team pick up a stirring victory by rallying past Costa Mesa,
9-8, Tuesday at Skip Carrillo Field.
The visiting Mustangs had built an 8-3 lead after 4 1/2 innings,
only to see Laguna rally for five runs in the bottom of the fifth
inning to tie the score.
A Calvin Mead single and a Jeff Bolar double was followed by a
two-run double by Garrett Rauch.
Ryan Landry followed with a single, which moved Rauch to third
base, and then Noah Brewster once again made his presence felt by
hitting a game-tying, three-run home run over the fence in
left-center field.
Jason Wahler came in to pitch the sixth and put Costa Mesa down in
order.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jody Steven led off with a pinch hit
double down the right field line. Sean Pfendler came in to pinch run
and was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Sam Luna. Calvin Mead then
came up a hit a single to right-center, driving in the winning run.
Kevin Kelly came in to pitch the seventh and put Costa Mesa down
in order to pick up the save for Laguna, which improved to 4-2.
The Breakers scored there first run in the bottom of the first
inning when Ryan Landry, a transfer from Tesoro, started off his
Laguna career with a home run over the left-center field fence.
Landry had been with the team since the beginning of the season,
but wasn’t eligible to play until his transfer was reviewed by the
CIF-Southern Section office.
After dropping its Pacific Coast League opener to visiting Tesoro,
10-6, Laguna came back Monday to down league rival Calvary Chapel,
4-3, at Vanguard University.
Jason Wahler made his first start for the Breakers and pitched
three strong innings to record the victory.
Laguna lead off the game scoring with a run in the first inning,
as Jeff Bolar had a lead-off single, moved to second on a stolen base
and scored on Landry’s RBI singl.
In the third inning, Laguna struck for three more runs, each
coming on a two-out rally.
Rauch started the rally with a single, stole second and moved to
third on a single by Landry, Brewster followed with a double up the
gap to drive in both Rauch and Landry, and Wahler singled to
right-center field to score Brewster.
Mead came in the relieve Wahler in the forth, and Bolar came on in
relief in relief in the seventh.
Calvary closed to gap to 4-3 but with one out and the bases
loaded, Bolar induced an infield grounder, which Landry and Michael
Selevan teamed up for to complete a double play to en the game.
Laguna hosts defending league champion Corona del Mar today at
3:15 p.m.
In boys’ volleyball, Laguna dropped a nonleague match to host San
Clemente, 25-21, 25-22, 25-12, Tuesday.
The Breakers were coming off a 13th-place finish at the 32nd
annual Orange County Championships, which were played last weekend at
Marina and Edison highs.
In the tournament, Laguna defeated Dana Hills, 25-21, 21-25,
15-11.
Luke Morris led the Breakers with 11 kills and Clark Olson had 29
set assists.
